Woodturning | Basket Illusion Ornament

In this video I turned a Christmas ornament using a technique called basket illusion. It's a process of beading and burning the wood.

Hi my name is Carl Jacobson,
I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together. We also do a lot of epoxy projects as well as woodturning.

It's a gorgeous Carl. For me I would have struggled to do this to a spalted wood, but the final effect is stunning. All the best. Ray
One of these days I'm going to try the basket illusion. Thanks for the video.

Two things you always hear from wood turners. Just one more cut and not what I originally intended to make. 😁

That's a great tip on playing cards. I've used the wires for some time but it's not a method I've liked. Will have to bring a deck of cards over to the shop tomorrow. Having dealt Poker for some years at Harrah's I have plenty of decks lying around.
Beautiful ornament Carl! That basket illusion technique is really neat! Happy Holidays! 🌲🌲👍👍

Stunning Carl! Beautiful basket weave pattern! I've figured out your set up except for what you attached to the board that fits into the post. Would you mind sending a pic of the bottom of the stand? You always make it look so easy!!! Thanks for sharing your workmanship!! Spot on as always!
Carl, it looks great as is. I personally think in most of the time the only reason to paint a nice looking wood turning is when you screwed it up or it was a really bad piece of wood. IMHO; you did a great job, don’t mess it up with paint or such. Thanks for the video. BTW; do you have build plans/ info on the platform that fitted into your banjo to do the longitudinal burn lines? Cheers, Tom
Wow. That’s really cool Carl. #belikecarl

Lovely ornament Carl, I have long held the belief that you are one of the most artistically talented turners around, but that pattern isn't technically a basket weave as squares. I thought basket weave should have the lines burned on every alternate bead to simulate the weave going under and over the beads. I am probably wrong and do not wish to offend, as I said I greatly admire your talent and can only aspire to such levels. Cheers, mate, have a safe and happy holiday season and a joyful new year.
Great project. Have friends doing basket illusion turnings and these are great. Like your card trick and platform jig. Another question: when I upgraded to my larger Easy Wood tools, I went with the rounded square shaper because of trying to learn and be more gentle with my acrylic blanks. But it appears you are using the “square” version on yours. In a couple of recent wood projects, I think I want to go back to the square cutter. Do you mind commenting on your thoughts about the difference and your thoughts on the negative rake version? Thanks so much, Merry Christmas to you, Robin and the entire team.
Good video. Carl. I've been a segmented wood turner for years and am getting ready to jump into the basket illusion thing. I'm curious about the new Easy Wood beading cutters. Have you tried them and what is your opinion and advice to someone new to the basket illusion game, D-Way or Easy Wood beading tools. Thanks.

Thank you George! Basket illusion is so much fun. The Easy Wood beading tool is great, but not great on softer woods.
How many cards are you using to get the burns? That is a fantastic tip! Thank you

Thank you!! I use 3 cards at a time and keep moving them around as they get burned.
