Woodturning - An Emerging Bowl

This video shows the method that I use to produce an Emerging Bowl. Many thanks to Ron Radliff for the inspiration and help in getting me to the point where I could understand the technique.

    I will be trying this one. I am a woodworker but havent been turning very long, just a few months. Your video on beginers boxes was the first turning video I ever watched. I have turned about hundred boxes now and have tried some different methods but keep going back and watching that video. Thank you it has helped me so much.

    Mike, I tried your hot glue idea to re-mount a completed large ash bowl so I could remove a badly applied finish and start over. This was my first attempt at using wipe on poly. Anyway, I hot clued the bottom to a waste block, sanded, re-finished and removed the bowl...no problem. Thanks for this great tip. Hot glue will hold very well.

    +Gary McCoy Hi Gary, I'm glad you agree with my faith in hot glue and it's reliability. The key is to make sure that the glue is as hot as your gun will get it, and that the glue block, and piece to be turned are dry, which I realise you already know :) Take care Mike

    Mike, I had a fun time doing one of these, and have to do more, maybe a couple dozen so I can demo it. I did post a link to it on Sawmill Creed forums under a thread about scrap wood turning projects. Layout is pretty critical on getting an even rim thickness. I found out I could 'cheat' a bit when power sanding the inside to remove a bit extra, and by rounding over the edges a bit, I can hide most of it. I don't think 'perfect' lay out is possible. Great project. Oh, I never use hot melt glue, but did for this one. It does work.

  • @MikeWaldt

    @MikeWaldt

    9 жыл бұрын

    robohippy I am so pleased you enjoyed making them Reed, as you say accuracy is paramount. Thanks for the "cheat", I will remember that. I am also honoured that my "inspirer" has been "inspired", if you get my meaning. Also glad you finally gave the hot glue a try, and liked it :) Take care Mike

    That is one very convincing looking little bowl! I was sure you were going for full size, never thought to make a small version of something just to show the technique, nice!! I've seen so many of these lately, I guess it's the new natural edge bowl of the summer? :) Thanks for the upload, perfectly explained, and yes, I also use hot glue and trust it, but I do need to get a new gun, my old one gives me problems with the glue feed...

    Beautiful video, Mike. The small bowl almost looks like the parts in a Catholic church. Where then holy water in it and cross themselves the churchgoers. :-) You could also sprinkle with top coat and make a small birdbath in the tree. -D But the bowl looks really great.

    An interesting and fun project to attempt. The confidence you express with in the hot adhesion was eye opening. How long must the pieces be clamped before they can be then worked? Also, I agree with Mr. Paramore ~ Small pieces would make good fixtures in a doll house. I enjoy the videos you share, Thank You.

Can't make my mind up if its a wash hand basin or a toilet for a dolls house . sorry;) Seriously though this is a very clever and fairly simple project very well explained. And may I just add that this is just my opinion and there are many more people out there with much more experienced opinions than mine (Sorry again,I can't help myself) Love the fancy graphics at the start As always another great vid All my very best!!!!..............Andy

    Wow! When you were hot-gluing that up I have to admit I was pretty skeptical about it. Clearly you have shown it can be done! Brilliant! Until you cut the bowl, I thought I knew where this was going. A turner here in the states cuts bowls with very thin "wings" if you will. His name is escaping me at the moment, but if I can find a link I'll share it with you. Up to the cut that was almost the same approach. Really cool design idea! Always a pleasure watching what you make in these videos. Hard to believe you have only been at it for three years...
