Woodturning a scrap wood Basket Illusion Box

It's amazing what can be made from a piece of scrap wood!
“Many of the woods I use are from trees that have been cut down due to disease or to make way for construction. This is wood that would otherwise be burned or end up in a landfill.
To me, it is exciting to find the hidden beauty in a chunk of wood. Even a very plain piece of wood offers design opportunities. When working with plain wood, I often enhance the wood by carving or burning. My carved and burned designs mimic textures and patterns found in nature.

You could possibly coat the entire piece in sanding sealer or even CA glue, that'd toughen the surface up and bond the outer fibres together minimising the risk of tearout ... maybe!! Why not mount your burning tool the same way as the pencil, that way you'd be doing the burning on the lathe, quicker and easier than doing it freehand. Anyway, what a cracking looking piece, a nice simple pattern and I like the colours you used as well 👍

That is the plan Barry, when I take the time to do it🫤 ( the burning I mean) I will try the sanding sealer, but I'm not sure what the ink will work like over it, if any of the sealer is left on. But I'll just try a small piece first.

Well done. I wonder if your beading tool would work better if you deepened the flute, sharpen the bottom side only, and sharpen the sides. Lowering the handle might help as well.

I'm going to try that Doug! Thanks for the tips! It's still shaped like the parting tool that it originally was, so I think I'm going to take one side completely off

To help with tear out you might try raising the handle to get a more negative rake presentation to the wood.

You can increased your spokes by any multiple of 12 by loosing the jaws and moving half of first division then just go around again
