Woodturning - A Red Mallee Burl Cap

Ойын-сауық

In this video we will be woodturning a Red Mallee burl cap into a shallow bowl. This is the first time that I’ve turned a burl cap and it has been a struggle to determine how to capture it’s beautiful figure and natural edge. I decided to go with something simple as the cap measured only a few inches tall at it’s thickest point.
I began by creating a flat section which I could use to mount between centers to flatten the surface to allow for a glue block to try and salvage as much burl as possible.
I then finished shaping the dish with a bowl gouge, sanded to 400 grit and finished Mahoney’s Walnut Oil.

    Thanks Doug! I've had this piece laying around for quite sometime and have been contemplating what to do with it. Decided to just keep it simple since it was so thin.

    Hi Hodge, love the burls, but the hair on the back of my neck stood up when you drilled it. If it spins your hand will get shredded! I've had a piece spin on me and I always use a clamp now.

    Hodge, like it! I do have a couple of questions; when you put the tenon on about how thick was it (1/8"); and does Mahoney's give a glossy or satin shine? Again thank you, its good to learn from you.

  • @HodgePodgeWoodWorks

    @HodgePodgeWoodWorks

    3 жыл бұрын

    Well I was thinking of turning a really small tenon on the burl piece itself, but then decided to use the glue block. I think that tenon was about 1/4 of an inch. Mahoney's gives more of a satin look but you can buff it if you'd like a bit more shine.
