Woodturning a Mess of Dogwood Roots
We are so, SO overdue for a good old fashioned episode of What's In That Pile that it kinda hurts, so what better way to dive back in then by throwing a neat ol' dogwood root ball onto the lathe and seeing what happens??

These comments are always so weird. Nobody actually talks like that, especially not someone who has a girlfriend/fiancé/wife/boyfriend/husband.

One of my horticulture professors said a good arborist can tell the type of tree by the bark more accurately than the leaves and that just blew my mind.

No way he hit us with root words along with the root ball Absolutely satisfying video
This is literally just so inspiring. Those roots would’ve just been taken to the dump and instead you’ve made something gorgeous out of it. It makes me wish I wasn’t a poor college student and could buy an entire shops worth of woodworking equipment
I've missed you too! I'm glad you're feeling up to diving into the pile
It was over an hour after watching this video that the “rootin’ tootin’” chatoyancy joke actually connected in my head 😂
It looks like a perfect platter for a big magical orb to ponder with your friends
Don't apologize for taking time to take care of yourself, that's always important. This was a fun project and I love how it turned out!
the pink color of the roots are so pretty! that was definitely a scary piece of wood to turn so i'm it turned out well
Pro tip: Hang a plumb line (or a string with a weight) off three random points around the circumference, while hanging the random object from the same point. Trace along the plumb line on the surface of the object. Where the lines intersect is your centre of mass.
Hey Justin I just wanted to say thank you for being the inspiration for me a high schooler to start woodturning I’ve only been at it for about a month but I’ve made a bowl and pen and made plenty of mistakes but with every mistake I learn something.
Wellcome back!! Hope you recovered well from the operation
Yay you're back!!! We missed you. Glad to see you looking well after your surgery, sorry you had to have that. 🤩
The colors of the piece and the shape turned out amazing!! I'd love to have that as a coffee table center or similar. I definitely missed your videos, excited for more! I'm hopefully going to go out foraging for young pine needles to try and make some pine needle sugar for the first time - I think I'd love to try some of the recipes you've done, and I know some of my family would love it, too! Been trying to bring more handmade things to family gatherings
Hi justinthetrees! Just wanted to tell that your content is absolutely awesome, and say thank you for sharing your hobby and the knowledge about it with us all! Also great god, why‘d you include santa‘s reindeers in the thanking? Poor Rudolph lol.

I had no idea you were sick. Well I how you are fine and healthy now and Welcome Back Justin
Welcome back, you've been missed! Here in N.C. the dogwood is our state flower (which should be popping out at any moment.)
I'm enjoying a bit of solara cask whiskey while I watch. I'm impressed with how well wood lathe tools keep their edge on interrupted cuts like this root section.
Hernias really suck dude, so congrats on the successful surgery! My dad just had his doubles hernia done(which makes like 5 or 6 in his entire life) just before Christmas while my Uncle had his fixed a bit less than 2 months ago. I assume it was done laparoscopically like my dad's which doesn't carry to much of a risk, save for the screen failing, so here's to a hopefully quick and uncomplicated recovery! My Uncle wasn't so lucky due to having severe and thick scar tissue from being stabbed when he was younger, which starts from under the diaphragm and ending just a bit below the belly button. They ended up opening him sternum to groin, removed the scar tissue before finishing with the hernia. Despite being 50-something days later and he still has a ways to go to fully heal.
The moment you lose the thing you just had in your had (at 3:58) is sooo relatable. Basically any time I make anything I’m like “where that f did I just put that?? I was just holding it!” lololol
Welcome back! Going back to the basics is great! Don't overthink your content - I'll watch woodworking any day. For cleaning off the root ball, would you try using pressurized water or no?
It's good to see you back! 😊😊 looking forward to see new stuff coming on the channel! 😊 And loved the little linguistic excurse about the word 'earth'😂 And what a nice piece it turned out to be!
I love the wood! I might have been inclined, when realizing what it was going to look like inside, to stop, glue a block in, flip it back over and turn the base more into a platter-like shape. However, as it is, it's interesting and attractive, so I call it a win!
Im glad youre healing! Thanks for sharing your learning in this video ❤
Your videos are a genuine treat for me. They provide so much joy and calm, and I love to see what you create. This was a nice surprise on this Thursday evening.
Glad you are back at it & hopefully getting stronger every day.
Feels like so long, I missed your videos, they're calm and help my brain slow down
I love how it turned out! I think if you try to do a similar project again maybe you could contact a resin artist? When you were taking us through it at 10:55 I just had an image of the piece as it was but filled in with resin to make a whole bowl and it looked awesome in my head lol! Wood and resin is very popular and you’re such a happy and kind guy, I’m sure if you found the right artist you would have a great collab! All love, I can’t wait to see what you do next!
I was initially thinking this would be a really cool bowl holder, kind of like a bowl pedestal in a way, but it turned out super cool. Thanks for all of your content, it's really fun to watch :)
I love your content i look forward to all of your videos and i really want you to make more eating trees
looks like the little bowl that sits by the front door to hold your keys, or spare change, i think it looks amazing, idk anything about wood but it looks cool
Just happy you're safe and happy
I'm glad the surgery went well and you're back, messing around with wood in the funnest ways. The "I don't like this" face and the step back to give it some space as it spins up: that's how I feel about the whole lathe process. I fear it but respect it. I want to try it but I'm far too much of a chicken. The colour in that dogwood even before the oil was beautiful! Also RIP to how much your dog is shedding 😂
Nice piece! A really good way to clean the dirt and rocks out of a root ball is with a pressure washer. Give it a try.
2024 has been a hell of a year so far. been having a rough time lately and especially today, so I was really happy to see this in my sub box. exactly what I needed today, thank you man
Love the full length content!!
Just finished "Around the World in 80 Trees" by Jonathan Drori. I know you generally feature native trees but I'd highly recommend it, some very cool tree facts and even includes your favourite word 'Chatoyancy' and has a reference to Pando in the Quaking Aspen chapter.
Dogwood fans (North Carolinians), where you at?
Awesome!!! And no rocks!! Thanks and keep them coming.
Always a good day when you upload another video
I had a large hernia fixed in September, it took months to be normal again. I have my next hernia surgery in June, and then one final one at some point after. Take time to recover properly! Happy to wait if it means you‘re better.
Glad you’re doing better my man! Great video! We all struggle with the creative process from time to time, I can only imagine how much more difficult it is to film that process and have it on display too. Love your stuff man. On a side note, I’m an arborist that services Utah County and Salt Lake if you ever have any tree questions or anything. Love to talk about trees.
So glad you are feeling well enough t be back here!
so excited to see another video! dogwoods are some of my favorite trees, they remind me of home back east. sorry to hear you needed surgery, and I hope you're feeling better! (btw I ran into you at Dune 2 a few weeks ago and it was so wild to see you! I didn't know I was in the same state as you :))
Yessss, my favorite wood guy's back!
I’m glad you are sorted and home now. Stay safe
No need to apologize!! We’re all just glad you’re feeling better 😊
I was sure he was going to say "root ball chatoyency". I'll admit though, that "rootin' tootin' chatoyency" is pretty funny too 😄😄😄
great to have you back, and beautiful bowl! 💚🪵⚔️
welcome back, Justin! you were on fire with those puns at the start hahaha, and that bowl looks so great!!!
Happy to see you back
Magnolia wood smells so great. Love it!
Another interesting fact about roots, the big chunky parts you are carving are not the parts initially which suck up water from the ground, the roots which suck the water up are hair fine and the best way to explain it is think about the lungs in your body, in the lungs you have small parts which transfer the oxygen into your body and the large part of the lungs is like a bellows, with tree roots. The very fine hair like ones suck the water up and it gets transferred up into the larger parts of the roots. I can’t remember the exact name of these roots hairs but it’s very interesting how it works, that’s why when you see these machines which dig the Earth up with the roots when replanting trees, or just moving them, the earth is took with them to help protect these fine haired roots and means when they are replanted they have a much higher chance of survival
How can you tell by it's a dogwood? By it's bark 😂😂😂
Such talent and skill. Beautiful piece of wood 👍👍
That would look great as a cake stand! you should get a cicular piece of glass to put on top
New piece from the pile!!! Yay!!!
We missed you! Glad you're ok! We want more trees especially edible ones 😊
Love your work dude glad you’re healing ❤❤
Very cool looking piece. Welcome back. Next time you turn something awkward like that, turning between centers can work well before you establish your mortice/tenon.
there was a art piece near a place i lived that had trees planted upside down so the roots were out. the root part reminded me of this
Ah, I've missed you 🥺 I'm glad you are feeling better 🎉🥳
It looks absolutely amazing! Glad ur feeling alright.
Awesome video man. Amazing tree. Can't wait to see more❤
Looks great mate well done, I like your approach to the job at hand 👍
glad to see you back! this video is awesome, I absolutely love the Cornus genus and this piece turned out awesomely weird!
Bb if you had a “nasty cold” at the beginning of the year, it was c0vid. This winter we had nearly the highest surge ever with no mitigations in place. At its peak this year 1 in 20 people had c19.
Missed ur videos. Glad u're back ❤
it looks absolutely beautiful
really enjoyed the commentary about the thought process and the info on the root process glad to see you back hopefully a new map piece is on the way
Just the video for a lazy start to a weekday morning! What a great day already.
I was wondering where you were!! Hope your surgery went well and you are fixed up and feeling better!!
I’m so happy you’re back. Seems like 2024 has been hard on you so far. Hugs and prayers that all goes well for you from here on.
The comeback is always far greater than any setback. Glad to have you back!
Glad to see you back and healthy!
Happy to see you back, and happy to hear that both surgery and recovery went smoothly.
Glad you’re feeling better. The bowl looks beautiful!
Nice bowl! I always thought roots were a mirror image of the canopy above but learned a while back they actually grow like you showed us. Pretty awesome to think how they would be all interconnected in forests.. Cheers from northern Ontario!
So glad you back!
Oh those colors are lovely.
Outstanding! Great job!
I love your videos, their so satisfying but so interesting I can't fall asleep, I just started watching you and now I can't stop.
Happy to have you back! Beautiful piece once again!
I wondered why I hadn't seen any of your videos lately. I'm glad you're on the mend! And this bowl you're making is freaking me out but I've got to watch it to the end! I know it's going to be fantastic
Absolutely love the bowl platter!! Such gorgeous colours 😍🥰
Glad to hear you're doing better! This is a lot of fun to watch
Love this piece and love you. Glad you healthy and back ready to go :)
When I was young, my parents had a bowl like this. You obviously couldn't store anything in it because of its shape so they bought a clear glass bowl to sit on top and that worked great.
Welcome back! I hope recovery went smoothly and that you're feeling better! Loved this video so much, the bowl turned out incredible 😍
Glad you're back and safe. Thank you for another great video!
Nice to see you back! Glad you’re all right after the surgery!
Nice to see you again and in good health. To be honest, I was afraid that something serious had happened to you because of this longer break. Now I know why, and I'm glad you're back in shape. Your videos are very interesting and inspiring. As usual, I'm eager to see the next ones :> Warm greetings from Poland
dogwood is one of my favorite trees i grew up in Pennsylvania and there was always a lot of them around i love their flowers☘️
Nobody should ever complain about your awesome content and passion.
Yes!!! I'm so happy you're back :D
I’ve been waiting for a new one of these!!! Glad you’re doing well now.
Looks stunning nice job
It looks so good!
I love this piece!!!
