Woodturning - A Grotty Piece of Plywood into a Vase
Turning a grotty piece of plywood into a vase with epoxy stripes ..
I was inspired to try this after seeing some work by Sarah Thirlwell who does some great turning using plywood and acrylics ...

Nicely done! Great way to salvage what normally would be discarded!
Nice piece and a very interesting concept. I like the ring effect.
ooh I love how the resin turns into silly string when you cut it
What can I say? You are magic!
Amazing how you turned something as mundane as plywood into a piece of art. Great job, Andy.

Since I read *TopFineWoodworking. Com* , I think nothing will ever surpass it as an outstanding woodworking book. The book consists of attractive images as well as drawings and also reader-friendly text. I consider this book a "must have" since it supplies a broad range of information on just about everything working with woodworking and does it quite well.?
It's so beautiful! I loved it!

Andy - well done! I would love for you to do a video showing us around your shop, what tools you use, and most importantly, what your design process is. Do you draw everything? It'd be great to see everything from idea inception to creation. Thanks again for showing us your fantastic work.

Thanks Jon.. I usually draw out ply or segmented pieces and have a rough idea of shape but the gnarly pieces and burls I just get them on the lathe and see where they end up .. 👍

John Repan if you mean when he's drilling; very very slow and careful is the answer. While he's turning the piece, I have no idea

Thin out the top a little more and you got yourself half a set of maracas!!! lol… great looking vase though!
Hi Andy, I noticed you didn't use any of your gouges, is that because of the material, or are you just happy using your tungsten carbide tool? Great job, by the way! Cheers Sean
@AndyPhillipWoodturning
6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Sean .. The Gouges would hardly touch it so had to bring out the carbide to take most of the material off ..cheers
Loved the vase. I have been watching more and more plywood turnings and I seems I have some 3/4 inch birch plywood in the shop from another project. I wasn't able to identify the type of glue you were using. Any suggestions on types of glue to use?
@AndyPhillipWoodturning
6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Terry .. I used a polyurethane glue on this which seemed to work well and goes off quick ..cheers
Lovely work. When you made the tenon for mounting into the jaws did you ever worry it might split and come off.
@AndyPhillipWoodturning
6 жыл бұрын
Thankyou .. Birch ply is quite dense and strong and I used a polyurethane glue so I was quite confident it would be ok .. I was a bit more worried when parting it off thought there might be a chance of it going then , that's why I decided to cut it off .. cheers
Looks really good. Did you have to any gaps in the plywood? If so, what did you use for filler?
these vases always come out super cool but my biggest problem with them is that larger bottom isnt bored out more than the mouths opening. Like, looking at it would give the illusion it holds more than it actually does.
Looks great! Is there any way to do something like this and seal the inside so you could put a bit of water into it with a couple flowers? Or can it only ever be a decorative piece?
@AndyPhillipWoodturning

I've just ordered some test tubes which im going to start incorporating into the vases so you could put some water in .. cheers

Great idea! Perhaps you could collaborate with a glass blower who could actually blow the glass into the vase. I bet if you found someone good, you could really make some awesome and unique pieces! = D

One more question. What did you use to color the epoxy?
Hi Andy, Can you tell me the material you used to make the wood and resin container? is it reusable? Thank you very much. To make round molds I intend to give Teflon cylinders with the hope that the resin will come off easily. What do you think? ciao dall'Italia
@AndyPhillipWoodturning
5 жыл бұрын
I used off-cuts of moisture resistant MDF not reusable .. Never used Teflon cylinders sounds interesting .. cheers
If you forget to cut the nails out, can the lathe turn them into hazardous projectiles?
