Woodstock attendees record oral reflections

Hundreds of Woodstock festivalgoers are reliving their memories for an ongoing project by the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. Over 1,200 oral histories have been recorded as the center seeks to preserve the meaningful stories. NBC News’ Anne Thompson reports.

I was 19 and it was an experience I e always remembered-the great music, the camaraderie, the sense of joy. But I do remember getting awfully wet & cold and had chronic bronchitis for years after. Best memory was waking up to Jimi Hendrix Monday morning, what a chilling wow! So glad I’m part of the oral history project of Woodstock now. ♥️

I also went to Woodstock ‘99 in Rome, NY. Took my daughter. It was very dark and violent. Did not enjoy it at all.

Woodstock will forever be the greatest of all music festivals. You’ll never get the combination of all the things that made it so special. The caliber of musicianship of artists that have made history. The message of peace and unity that wasn’t just an ideal, it was lived. The cultural revolution of the time, social justice and the fight against segregation and racism. The love and the desire to change the paradigm of violence and hate. On top of all that, the absence of phones and influencers. 🤘🏽

I just went to the grounds and visited, incredible experience. We won’t ever get to that again, she’s right! The museum had mentioned there’s an entire effort to capture these interviews in 4k! Super cool! If you go to the grounds, find Lenny! He was there that day and knew Max, the stories he will tell! Love to everyone.

My recollection is less the music and more the transcendent experience of being with several hundred thousand people my age or a bit older who were manifesting love and freedom from all societal constraints for three days and nights. Or, to look at it another way, imagine the power of tens of thousands tripping on acid together in the midst of the best live music of our generation.

I was 11 Although I lived next to the town of Woodstock I have it on good authority that not many 11 year olds at white Lake my Dad put all of us on the family boat and anchored off Esopus Island on the Hudson River Including my 14 year old sister . However her then. boyfriend and future husband did attend with his best buddy. Woodstock 94 I worked Ems surrounding the festival and had a 15 year old female code on me with only a handheld radio and no way to call for ALS while on the Thruway to Benny we got a pulse back at the bottom of the hill below the hospital and respiration restarted as the Rig backed into the dock. I started training for my AEMT soon after.

I attended Woodstock 99. It was amazing. It was the best and worst experience of my life. The local police were unhappy that the event was in their backyard. They wouldn't allow me to turn my car around to gather supplies. They said if I left the sight I would not be allowed re-entry even though I never handed them my ticket. I am angry that the yuppie spawn of the original generation trashed the event on the last day. I am angry that Micheal Lang allowed the city of Rome, NY the free reign to set their concession prices at 5 dollars for a small bottle of Poland Spring and 10 dollars for a bean burrito just to secure permission to hold the event in Rome. I am still gut sick that one of the yuppie buzz cut spawn declared that "we killed Woodstock!" I am mad that the subprime mortgage collapse of 2007 and 2008 forced the backers of the 40 anniversary Woodstock to pull out. I am disappointed that Micheal Lang couldn't find replacement backing. He was only asking for 8 million dollars. It was cool that Mayor Michael Bloomberg was going to allow the 40th to happen in Prospect Park in Brooklyn, NY. I am angry that no municipality would allow Micheal Lang to hold a 50th Anniversary event before he passed away from cancer.

Let's be fair. The line up and atmosphere makes everything after seem lesser, no matter how great. Woodstock 94 was amazing in many ways as well, anything after is trying to recapture those two.
