Wow. As always. Amazing.

Very nice & practical

Been building stairs for 25 years. Can tell you from experience that if side pieces aren’t plumb or angle goes in toward outside of limbs, it will change tool setting. Center mount pivot is the strongest for keeping tool in correct alignment. Bought a bunch long ago and ones I build out of hardwood are much better. Just an opinion.

You can get around that by putting a reference stop next to the knob and then loosening the knob to remove the jig. Once the jig is out, use the reference stop to reset the track back to the measured length.

It would cost $30,000

It is theoretically possible to have a "nook" that is so "out of square" in so many ways, that you won't be able to remove this gage after locking all the knobs. Agreed, this is a rare situation, but it is something to think about.

Mark the point where the scales overlap with a pencil or marker. Close the gauge enough to get it out. Slide it back out to the mark. You're on your own to figure out how to get the shelf in.

@@WoodpeckersLLC LOL exactly. Sometimes you have to modify what's there, there's no way to just cut something that fits in every possible direction. If it's wood or drywall there is usually enough "give" to make it work.

Anyone else notice the track saw was no where near the line he made? Wonder how many times it took to cut the piece to fit 😂

Having made stair my own stair gauges, I have one question regarding this refined design, in particular the use of only one clamping knob to hold the angle setting fixed: Does the interface contact area between adjustable blade and extendable straight bar have some sort of surface texturing or other friction increasing treatment to help resist accidental rotation of the angled blades when removing the tool from a confined inside opening and transporting it to the saw station? In using my early designs, I found such accidental rotation could be a very unwelcome and expensive surprise.

What is the name of this tool?

Bullet tools stair scribe or first one that I heard of was stair wizard. Floor layers has been using these for years.

I acknowledge the fact this is made by a durable, high quality aluminum material, precisely machined so I don't have to worry about the quality. That represents value and some people are willing to pay more for it, you see it simply as a "expensive sliding bevel" no thought at all on anything else.

@@juanmallqui7226 yes I gave it a lot of thought. It’s over engineered too. It’s like reinventing the wheel. I have taken another look and it’s not even a sliding bevel as this over engineered and overpriced tool only has 1 use whereas a sliding bevel has a multitude of uses. Enjoy your day.

It’s stupid that these are only one time tools.

Ok. I’ve been doing custom stair work and carpentry for 30 years. I’d lose this thing in my trailer! I have to do perfect work on snowy days, or in the rain or mud. I make my own tools for this. You simply can’t buy skill!

Great idea BUT your demonstrator did not address how you use it when you cannot just lift the Jig out like he was able. I believe I know the answer but he failed to explain it and you should address it right away. Otherwise, I would suggest it is another great Woodpecker One Time Tool of which I have quite a few!

I see your point but I think all you would need to do is insert the jig in the reverse direction (from front to back) and double check your depth from front to back as well if you don’t have a way to put a straight edge across the front of it to butt against

Bawdsey64, the blades on the bevels are thin enough that you can simply angle it out from one end. It will not wedge.

If you can't find a way to lift out the gauge, you won't be able to get a shelf/tread in there, either.

If it gets stuck, you can get around it by using this method. This method assumes there is insignificant play between the T-track and the sliding aluminum connector. Use a spring clip clamp to clamp a reference stop right next to the white delrin washer on the knob (the knob is where Jeff's right hand is at 1:17). Lock the stop tight against the knob. Be careful not to damage the T-track. On this video, you'd lock the reference stop to the left side of the knob (or the pinky finger side of Jeff's right hand). Then loosen the knob to shorten the track to get the jig out. Once it's out, slide the track back to the original measured length according to the reference stop. Then tighten the knob. At this point, the stop can be removed.

Other people make these at 20% of the cost.

great concept but once again woodpecker selling something at a ridiculous price for something that should cost a fraction of the price.

If you really believe you know how much such a versatile, high precision device should cost to make, and know how to manufacture it, why don't you go for it? I'm sure many would flock to buy your fairly priced clone, even knowing that you had copied some of the unique design refinements. I've made my own stair gauges for decades, and I've done hundreds of successful professional installs with them, but my shop made tools can't compare to the versatility, durability, and compact portability of a gauge like this one. Like you, I might not opt to invest in this particular WP tool to solve a problem I can adequately address for less money out of pocket, but your characterization of the price as "ridiculous ... for something that should cost a fraction of the price" is an unfair, uninformed, and unnecessarily snarky critique. Why not just do as Ken Kesey suggested: "Take what you can use and let the rest go by."
