Woodpeckers Pt. 2 - How They Can Climb Trees - How To Tell Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers Apart

Ойын-сауық

Woodpeckers are well adept at Climbing Trees as they search for insects, they have 4 toes; 2 backward pointing ones and two forward pointing ones with long curved claws which they use to grip onto trees, and their stiff tail feathers offers support as they move around or while at rest. Northern Flickers, however, look for their food(ants and beetles) on the ground digging with their unusual and slightly curved bill, and long tongue that are barbed at the end. Some Woodpeckers, like the American Three-toed and Black-Backed woodpecker have only 3 toes; 2 forward pointing ones and just one backward pointing one.
Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers look very much a like but it is fairly easy to tell them apart given that the Downy isn't very big, not much larger than a white-breasted nuthatch, while the Hairy is much larger, the size of a American Robin. Another Woodpecker species that is quite similar is the Black-Backed woodpecker and the American Three-toed woodpecker. Unlike with the Downy and hairy, these two are roughly the same size and both have just 3 toes but the most obvious difference between them is that the American Three-toed has white barring going down it's back and hind neck whereas the Black-backed woodpecker back and hind neck is completely black, no white at all.

When my kids were little, they couldn’t tell these two apart. I came up with “huge Hairies and dainty Downies”. Now my grandkids do this too.

Ever since I hung some suet cages, the woodpeckers have gravitated to our yard. They are cool to watch. Not only do they love the suet, but they also enjoy nuts.

Thank you Leslie once again for your time and effort to bring us such education concerning birds! My wife and I enjoy all kinds of different animals but our favs are cats. Sorry birdies but outdoor kitties are not so nice....all of ours are indoor cats. In every way we love animals of any kind and treat them all with the respect and love as they deserve. I wish that more people could do as we do Leslie but it is what it is. Every one of our loved ones are rescues that we cherish deeply as a family member.

Great now I’m even more confused because I have a small black and white woodpecker that moves so quickly between my feeder and tree that it’s hard to tell what kind it is.🤣🤷‍♀️

I’m going through the same ordeal. We have 2 woodpeckers (male and female) visiting our patio that I could’ve sworn were Downys because of their size, but their markings are that of a Hairy. I’m so confused! 😩

There's a red bellied Woodpecker here who makes his calling noise, (not pecking) late evening and into the night. Why is he or she doing that?

Oh how awesome, or is it? I ask because some people get annoyed woodpeckers drumming, does it bother you much? I bet you aren't too bothered by their loud drumming, I bet you'd be one of the ones that would enjoy listening to him as he works away :) Thanks for the comment, Rich. Hope you are doing well, Take Care
