Lovely film. I enjoy watching the little woodpecker family in our own garden so I loved this wonderful footage and excellent v/o. It reminded me of some of the old Disney live action animal films with great narrators.

Got a pair of similar woodpeckers intent on making my home their new home, already four holes in the appron sash I've patched up. Here comes spring and another round of me vs woodpeckers. I don't know why they want my house, I'm surrounded by trees. Ohh well. DING, DING

They are all members of the Corvidae family which also includes Blue Jays, etc.

Animals around here don't quarrel. There's enough for everyone and it's too durn cold. That said, nobody harasses the woodpecker. Crows and Jays defer to him - it seems to me. I did once see a 'possum with a porcupine quill in his back. Not sure what happened, but there were chunks of porcupine up and down the road the next morning.

Hello, great video! The black attackers were jackdaws, but you could hear ravens and crows in the background, and there were some crows sitting on the trees. I don't know what the light brown bird (the one that wanted to steal woodpecker's home) was tho.

Very well done, i am glad you did not romanticize it except for giving names. As for the squirrel, he was the second greatest threat in this video after the nasty crows. I don't think the young woodpecker was home when that squirrel got in the hole. Squirrels kill birds hatchlings, they're not as cute as they look, there is graphic video of it on youtube. Or maybe the woodpecker was just big enough to defend itself. I am glad he made it.

Woodpeckers do take young blue tits and great tits from nest boxes to feed to their own chicks . That's just nature. Everthing even crows and squirals have there place in nature.

You either live in the human paradigm and have to rationalize good/bad and subjectively call some things nasty or you don't and place yourself as the universe then there is neither good nor bad, everything is just living processes including beings. However in the latter you become a monster, because absolutism leads to inhumane behavior.

I explained something to you that is way above your philosophical and universe comprehension that justifies why i used 'nasty crows' in the original comment. You don't understand that this is not a rational purely world. Rational is subjective to human arbitrary classification. A crow is nasty and is not nasty when the universe looks at it. You're too young.

Marvelous footage! And I highly appreciate the absence of music for most of the video. But one thing: Those "crows" are actually jackdows. ;-)

Thanks for your nice comments . Not strictly true , its a common mistake . All Jackdaws, ravens, Hooded Crows , etc ( there are 11 species in all )all fall under the heading of 'Crows' . Not a lot of people know that !

@@erikholm8899 I think you mean the Corvidae family. Do you call all Corvidae "crows" in English? In German (my native tongue) we call Corvidae "Rabenvögel" (raven birds) but distinct between crows and jackdows (Coloeus monedula).

Great work! However whilst you can hear crows calling in the background, the Corvids attacking in the main sequence are actually Jackdaws.

After nearly 5 years not seeing woodpeckers in my garden i now have 3 male female and young fledgling they seem to luv the suet bites in the feeders.

You held my attention from beginning to end. Wonderful job! I live in Massachusetts (next door to New Hampshire). I'm assuming New Hampshire got its name from the location of this video?
