Wood turning tips and projects. Taking you from start to finish with a ruff piece of wood to your sanded and finished project.
Purple Heart pendant turned on a lathe. This is fast project where you can add alot of creativity. I did the design on the lathe, but you could also carve a custome design or do some inlay with wire or other wood species. This project only takes about 15 or 20 minutes and is nice project for someone special.

    Thanks Brendan, the pencil lines are a life saver you can barely see the piece with out them. Take care, Carl

    Hi Guy, Yes, I like the round one better. I still need the flat one though to get into some tight spots. Sorry, I have not called you back. I have been swamped and I will try to reach you this weekend and we cannot talk about a run to the beach for wood. Thanks, Carl

    Lovely work! That's a great tip about the pencil lines because I was trying to cut a pendant on a sliding chuck and couldn't see it so made a real mess. I'll make a jig like yours because the time invested would be quickly saved. Best Wishes, Brendan.

    Very nice pendant, it's a pity it will lose its colour over time. I made one last week with double sided tape and it's difficult to get the sticky tape off the pendant. Thanks James

    As always,nice work. I like the jig you made to turn the pendant. I'm still learning what the different tools are used for so thanks telling us which ones you use. Also how to use them. I need that. Tom

    Hello Carl, I was just wondering where you think the best place to find purpleheart wod would be! PLEASE REPLY! THANKS!

    I have used this method for 8+ years & the same saw blade. I started using this method when I made a box & didn't want to sacrificy any wood. I have never had it catch, I simply place the blade on & apply light pressure & slowly move back & forth so as not over heat. I do use a parting tool as well, but with releaf cuts, it takes out alot of material & sometimes I don't want to waste the material. If there is anything in the video you are not comfortable with, please do not attempt it. Carl

    I found your videos when a friend recommended I look into using purple heart (I use antlers, and one is a bit purple!) and I have a question about the sanding you did. What grit is it and what is in that can that you are dabbing the sand paper into?

    Carl, Like you,I use a hack saw and have never had a problem. Actually got the idea from watching one of your videos. I use to use a flush trim saw, but found it flimsy.

    Two things: one, you should totally be wearing gloves when carving the wood- my sources say the sawdust can irritate skin. Two, where can I buy a small amount of Purple Heart wood? I have a jewelry project in mind.

    HauntedShadowsLegacy Wearing gloves while working on the lathe is extremely unsafe! You might try Woodcraft.

    There is a certain amount of danger involved in everything, "safe turning" included. It's about risk vs reward. The risk from using a hacksaw is minimal at best. Not for nothing, but it's people like you that discourage me from making a video.

  • @acoustic49
    @acoustic4913 жыл бұрын

    Super, super dangerous using a hacksaw on a spinning lathe, if that blade snaps you could lose an eye , finger or have a a serious laceration, I would recommend all viewers DO NOT USE THIS METHOD!!!!, that is what parting tools are for.
