Wood turning bowls From an old Black Walnut tree for the Shook Homestead
Hello, Thanks for turning in
In this video I’ll be turning a few bowls from the wood of this old Black walnut tree for the Shook family,
They wanted a few for a memorial of this old tree,
This tree was used to clean and preparation of Hogs
Field dressing/ Processing for meat.
Here’s a little bit of the history of this land and tree
Written by Brenda Shook:
Land purchased by William Shook
Approximately 120 years ago.
Each Fall when Hog killing time came around, This old walnut tree was used to hang hogs up in so the internal organs could be removed; This became known as the hog hanging tree.
About ten years ago the old walnut tree finally gave up the cause and fell over after years of life.
Today the fifth generation of the Shook family is still living on this land, Just like the old walnut tree that set down its roots on this land deep in the Appalachian Mountains,
The Shook family has planted their roots just as deep.
I turned 7 bowls and, theirs a tree root that I had cut off the tree also but I didn’t get it made into anything yet, The finish on the bowls is
Mineral Oil Beeswax.
My friend Brian of BCH Enterprise
Did the Laser engraving.
Towards the very end of the video I added a few nature clips, one my wife captured some footage of a Bear in the back yard, one we were walking and came across a massive Burl that had the entire inside rotted out with moss growing all over it, couple spring flowers and a Black snake at the very end, me and my wife saw while walking around the park.
I hope you enjoy the video
And hope you tune in for
next one.

The bowls are beautiful! The grain in the black walnut wood is amazing. I love that they have a special history too.
Great story and what an honor to get to work with that Walnut with such a history, Kimsey! You really did that tree proud! Very entertaining video, perhaps your best ever! Great job, my friend! 😃
Gorgeous wood makes such beautiful bowls. They are a blessed family.
That is a fine looking batch of beautiful bowls Kimsey. Fantastic looking Black Walnut!
Absolutely amazing wood! And you the guy who got to turn all that WALNUT with such a historical edge. Put a couple of marks up on the wall to hold that memory.
Just beautiful! I've turned a few bowls from special family trees- its always an honor to do so. Love the work you did with these (and beautiful finish too😊).
All I can say is WOW.🪱
Excellent work. Just can’t beat that walnut grain.

Beautiful job Kimsey. Very fortunate to have so much awesome wood to work with.
Masterful job creating heirloom gifts for the Shook family. Kudos my friend!..... Nothing like a Water Moccasin guard snake to do the job! as well.....
Some real pretty wood there, and nice that the family has something to hold on to after the tree fell, thanks for sharing.
Good evening, Kimsey.

Awesome job the figure is very nice. Well done thank you for sharing
Very nice way to memorialize that hog hanging tree for the Shook family. I see you were wearing dust protection while turning that walnut. I find that walnut dust really irritates me and I have to protect myself as well. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome job and that walnut is some beautiful wood with some amazing grain patterns. The finish you put on them is beautiful
