Wood Turning a MASSIVE Log

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is definitely the biggest log I've put on my lathe so far. Probably too big as you can see from the wobbling at the beginning, even at the slowest speed. It was a pretty freshly cut eucalyptus log, but it had cracks in it already so I had to use some resin to fill them. It created a pretty cool effect, so all in all I think it's a neat vase!

I love watching these videos. They are so calming and I greatly enjoy seeing beautiful things emerge from raw wood. I come from a long line of creative people: artists, woodworkers, designers, but I can't draw a straight line with a ruler.

WOW! - That is quite unique and beautiful. Your original log reminded me of one I took about 40 years ago, slightly larger in circumference and height, which I sanded down and heavily lacquered to create a nice HEAVY stool, that serves well for sitting, or for propping your feet on.

Oh I bet that looked cool! I have some more large sections of this tree, maybe I’ll try that. But they’re so heavy that once it’s in place I think it would be a permanent stool haha

I have always thought that a vase needed to be bigger in the bottom to be able to stand up when putting a load of flowers in them. Maybe that isn't the issue with vase made of wood! Unless lining them with glass or resin they probably aren't water proof and can't contain other things than twigs and grass - which can be so lovely! So the shape of this vase was surprising and with the silvery resin it looks stunning! Well done! 🤩❤❤❤👍

nice piece, I would suggest though that you get the bigger jaws for that chuck so that when you turn a large piece it is more secure.

  • @vance3973

@@CookWoodworks I believe you actually have the same chuck that I do, but i got another set of jaws with mine that go to 4 inches. I have had good luck with just using bigger jaws, although if you are going to look for a new chuck as a whole I have heard good things about one-way chucks. And i have used some newer novas that worked well. I would personally just go with bigger jaws on your current chuck and always make sure you have a good tenon, as that would be much cheaper than a new chuck and jaws.

Fantastic...really fantastic! May I ask yuo some question? What's the speed you use for working big logs? And how many times did you have to sharp your tools to end a job like this? I'm a beginner and find great difficulties working big logs...thanks for answering and for sharing! See you soon!

  • @CookWoodworks

Thanks for watching and all your support, happy to answer questions! Most of the time I had the lathe at the slowest speed of about 350 RPM. Later I was able to speed up to about 600 but it still wobbled. I sharpened my tools probably 5 or 6 times, but the wood was still green so I didn’t have to sharpen as often as usual
