Wood turning a chef's salt and pepper holder #66
Ойын-сауық
My brother Stuart, when first left school trained as a chef, and is an excellent cook, asked me to make for him a container for salt and pepper that he could use while cooking
I hope this tutorial will guide you through the steps as how to make this.
I try to use this woodturning channel as a platform to share ideas, and to demonstrate to other wood workers the steps needed to achieve this.
I use many different types of wood in varying combinations, as well as combining this with resins, i tend to use glass cast 50 as i can use this without the need of a pressure pot.
For my finishes I use things like Wood dyes spirit based and water based, high gloss wax and
Boiled Linseed Oil - Danish oil and hard wax oil. I also like to experiment with differing textures to give my bowls a different feel to them
For my actual wood turning i use a galaxy DVR lathe 14 44 which is very versatile, which gives me the ability to turn a 14-inch bowl or spindle length of 44-inchs
Thank you very much for watching my channel and please feel free to leave comments below.

Excellent work! I think you were wise to reduce the size of the knob. The first was bulky. Only thing I would have done differently is I would have put a burn line on the top of the knob on one lid, not on the other, to easily distinguish salt and pepper sides! I do love oak, even well seasoned I think it turns beautifully and looks great when finished. I used to have a source of oak wood pallets that I broke down years ago and have used it in various projects over the years and I am finally nearing the end of. I use it mainly for wood turning now and love it. Nothing like getting white oak that has a lot of figure in it for free! Great video, great results!! Scott

Thanks Scott glad you enjoyed it, I made a smaller one than this and my brother uses the bigger one for cooking and the smaller one on the table at dinner parties, and he said it always generates conversation about how unique it is
Idea is interested, yes, would add a detail on lid for salt, ring or burn line.
Turned out beautiful. Thanks for sharing the trick with the piece of lead and the fixing screws through the piece.
"Somewhat similar" is good for us Steve - we like it!😀

Glad you enjoyed it and are inspired by it, let me know how you get on with it, I have been giving it a lot of thought latey as to how i could extend this further with maybe 3 or 4 holes in it
I love the way the shiny stuff transforms the wood and really shows off the grain

Thanks Nicola, the "shiny stuff" is a cellulose based sanding sealer, and your right it does show off the grain to very good effect, that has to be one of the most enjoyable moments of wood turning when you apply that and you see all that beautiful grain exposed for the first time
Fantastic project Steve 👍really enjoyed watching 😁

Sorry ruby but that piece has long gone, so im unable to measure it. I know i was more governed by the diameter of the pieces i can turn on my lathe, are you thinking of having a go at this?
