In my youth, cast iron models of this type were ubiquitous on cattle operations here in western Iowa. They were called "cowboy tank heaters" or "cast iron cowboys". They actually did the job pretty well. You could burn up broken fence posts, scrap wood, and occasional lump of coal and keep water in front of your cows. My grandfather smoked Prince Albert pipe tobacco and always had an empty can that he would put some kerosene in and then add some corn cobs for "starters". That was during the 40's and 50's. I was still finding stashes of his "starters" in the '80's when we took down some of the old buildings to upgrade. I still have (and use) on of the cast iron cowboys. Glad to see someone making a new edition of them.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm a couple hours north of Richardton. I 've always wanted to build one of these, but those ones are so nice I'd probably buy a couple.

Awesome let me know how they work. I always wanted to pick one up. Just never have it. Sounds like we’re neighbors.

You need to stack rocks or cyinder blocks on your heater. That keeps it on the bottom

I was always thinking of the military submersion heater. Can use kerosene or old oil if needed. But there getting hard to find.
