How do you actually determine if the wood used is solid and sturdy?

Look at the edge of the table top. If it is solid wood, you will see some sort of assembly like vertical lines indicating that pieces of wood were glued together. If you see a horizontal line close the table top, there is a good chance that it is veneer. As far as sturdiness is concerned, the legs on the tables should have an angled piece of wood holding the table sides and the leg together. In addition, if you see groves on the table sides, the table will be even more sturdy as there are more surfaces glued and screwed together.

Thanks for the reply! however I am still at a loss, not because your explanation isn't good but more because I'm extremely new in this. DO you have a video to illustrate or show what you mean somewhat? It would be a great help!

We do not and we can't post pictures here, unfortunately. If you know what a butcher block is (google it) you will have a good idea of what the edge of a solid wood top looks like (a bit more dramatic though). You can also look at this video. At production good manufacturer should do some strength test for construction, to ensure furniture sturdy, i.e impact, loading and strength test for chair.

One more important thing: what kind of wood is used to make this furniture? This is a hard answer to many people. Oak? Maple? Ash? To name a few.

All kinds of woods are used. Oak, Maple, Ash, are the most common ones. Pine is also solid wood but it will mark more easily.
