Alex, Thank you your videos and for a review of these wonderful tools. Some say they are "good-for-the-price" but I say they are very good at any price and better than most. I have tools from many of the "high-end" brands, both antiques and new, and have found these to be some of the best overall that I have come across. They might not be as highly polished as some of the competition but they are excellent where it counts and great in general. I was so impressed with my original set that I have purchased more including some for friends and family. The company has responded to all of my questions about the brand and have indicated they are working hard to expand their line but are doing it slowly in order to make sure that new profiles are going to meet the same high quality as their current set. They are offering a 10% discount code on first purchase for individuals willing to sign up on their company website. Doing so not only sweetens the bargain but also allows customers to be notified of any new offerings.

Alex is a great teacher. You should check out his online school, awesome. As a student you can Email him and ask question and he will answer. Like the haircut Alex. I have been interested in these Schaaf tools. For the price point looks like a great buy. Hopefully Schaaf tools will have more sizes in th future. Thanks for the review.

Awesome video, Alex! I came across your channel a few days ago doing research on woodworking and techniques for beginners. I'm so happy to see you do a review on these tools. I have a pfeil knife set but no chisels. I think this will be the new acquisition!

I was finally able to.finish watching this and I sure missed the detail carving I was expecting. I would have loved to watch the details and hear your comments on strengths and minuses regarding the Schaaf tools. Hopefully I will eventually find a tutorial session here that doesn't skip ahead etc so I can watch for more details on what tools are used where and why etc. Oh well, I will keep digging through the various lessons. I am especially interested in learning about how to carve reliefs with less deep 3d work. I will eventually gain enough skill to move towards a 3 inch or 12/4 thick piece of lumber. I am limited in what I can afford for source wood so I must teach myself more relief carving and learn more about how to properly use the 23 tools that I purchased from schaaf. Schaaf Doesn't appear to offer individual gouges like pfiel and others, at least not on their own website so far. I may be forced to order pfiel gouges to get specifics like you mentioned, a 1mm #11, maybe a 2mm #11, a 45 degree v-tool. One of those Gonzales tools that you mentioned elsewhere. My initial intention on learning carving is to perform rifle shift carving and I have already purchased the Ramelson line tools for that except for one or two that I will have to special order from them before they pass away or completely stop making the tools. Again pointing out that I need to learn more shallow relief type of carving. Ohhh, I could go on and on but you have your own life to live and business to run. Take care friend, God Bless.

I'm extremely new so I could be sharpening them all wrong, but I had a hard time getting an edge on the set I bought about a year ago. When I finally had a sharp edge, I went to carve cherry and the edges rolled and chipped. Even in basswood, they just smashed the grain. I bought Pfeil and didn't have those issues. I know in the past they've had quality control issues which may be part of the batch I bought. They might be better now, but it was enough to scare me away from them. I completely acknowledge that it might be me. But as a beginner, I don't know enough one way or the other to troubleshoot. I know you and a couple other professionals speak highly of these for what they are. I'm sure they're good tools if you know how to set them up properly. I just felt like going with the known brands would help me eliminate one variable while I'm trying to learn the basics. Thank you for your content. It's well done and inspirational.

Thank you for your comment. May be quality changed or may be bevel is to low. Cherry is a harder wood, bevel needs to be a little higher. Try to get inside bevel a little higher it will create a little harder edge of the tool.

May i ask how long that took. Ican rough out but beyond rough out i am lost with clean undercut and detail. Frustrated in Wassergass Pa. Trying self teach thru videos and struck. Tool prep as I know is critical and my tools are sharp but minute details are difficult on end grain. Stuck for 3 months now. Thinking my tools are sharp but I wonder if,..... hmmm? Videos on perfect condition of tools appreciated. Now have 25 degrees but end grain is an issue. Comments??? Thank you Sir.

It did not take a long time. Carving itself about an hour or so. I could spend a lot more time and take it to perfection, but the goal of this video was to evaluate Schaaf Wood Carving tools. I will have a full course based on this carving without speeding up video content.

First, thank you for spreading your knowledge in gift form here. Also thank you for showing that investing into Schaaf tools won't be a mistake. I have now purchased everything that Schaaf had to offer from the links you provided. Thank you for the discount for your students, that saved quite a bit! Now I have to go spend the time sharpening all 23 gouges that you end up with when you purchase their three sets. FYI, the link you provided to download the drawing for this project appears to be dead. At least I have not gotten anything other than 404 errors. Thank you again!

Thank you for the upgraded link,it worked fine. Regarding this showing, unfortunately for me that the really quick way you edited this down I was not able to actually learn much of how you accomplished it all. You said that you used 11 out of the 12 schaaf tools from that set but no examples of actually why, I guess that was done for business reasons. Oh well, I will keep digging through the lessons on you school site. There are so many! Thank you for your gifts to help new folks learn.
