What a lovely piece of dapper cat art! So is making the lighter burn color vs darker just a matter of pressure applied and time on the area to burn?

You make it looks so easy! I cannot for the life of me make clean lines. It’s like my wood burner is getting stuck in the grain of the wood

Hi! If the wood burner seems like it's getting stuck in the grain of the wood, it could be caused by a couple things: 1. Use lighter pressure. If you press down too hard, the point of the burner will sink down into the wood and the grain can interfere with those smooth lines. Try to burn with heat, and not pressure. 2. They type of wood you're using. If you burn on a piece of wood that has a heavy grain, such as pine, then it can be more difficult to burn clean lines. I'm using basswood in this project and you can find some of my favorite types of wood on my Amazon affiliate store: www.amazon.com/shop/woodburninguniversity/list/32U66CZ5M81S6?tag=onamzminisaro-20&ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d 3. End cut pieces of wood burn more challenging that face cut pieces. If you are burning on a piece of wood where you can see the circular grain, that is more difficult to burn even lines than on a piece where you don't see the grain. 4. Too high of heat. If you're burning with a wire tip burner, which can burn extremely hot, and you use too high of a temp, the point can easily sink into the wood and be affected by the grain. I hope this helps! :) -Minisa Robinson, Creator of Wood Burning University

I have a question! It feels like my pen isn't consistent over the wood, like on some areas it burns beautifully but on others it doesn't. So when I drag the pen across the board of wood like a highlighter mark it's really inconsistent, kind of it's running out of "ink".. is that an issue with the pen or am I doing something wrong? Thank you 💓

Yes, I do wear a simple pair of gardening gloves. This helps protect against accidental burns.

Your only supposed to use the tip of that shader?

  • @WoodBurningUniversity

For line work, I use the upper part of the shading point. When blocking in large areas of solid black, I'll lay the shading point flat on the wood and use the whole area. I hope this helps!

Hi! When wood burning with a soldering-iron type of tool like this one, the artform is very safe. I strongly recommend that you do NOT attempt the fractal wood burning, where people use a dangerous amount of electricity to create the burned pattern. That type of wood burning artwork is definitely dangerous! Stay safe!
