WOOD BOILER SHOOTOUT | OLD SCHOOL VS. NEW SCHOOL W/

Ойын-сауық

HI everyone we partnered with Matt ‪@Treestofirewood‬ for a WOOD BOILER SHOOTOUT. The idea was to compare the OLD SCHOOL boilers like my CL 6048 by Central Boiler compared to the newer gassification style units, in this case, A Heatmaster 10,000G. The idea was to see how long of a burn we can get with EQUAL firewood loads. Obviously there was different heat loads and outside temp but we tried to keep it close as possible! Enjoy!

    The comparisons are cool. Before I started running an outdoor boiler I had the plan to run the machine we already had, but upgrade in a couple years to a gasification unit. Now that I’ve been running my classic, I don’t have much interest in making the swap. I’ve got plenty of woods and a sawmill that produces plenty of slabs, and neighbors that have trees they want cut or need cleaned up. And the routine maintenance on it is quick and easy!

    This was a fun experiment you guys did. I have the central boiler 5648. Similar to yours. I've had it 20 years this year. I love it still. No patches and my water tank has no leaks still. When it goes I'll replace it with the same boiler. My neighbor had the central boiler in gasification model and has more concerns with properly dried wood. He also has more problems. I understand they are getting better. Nice job on the video.

    Depends on the heat draw in most scenarios. I have a plate style heat exchanger so the returning water is still 170+ for sure as its constantly circulating regardless of the heat draw.

    Jay, why did you put in woodstove size wood. Your 6048 can take big chunks of 2-2.5 footers. I guarantee at 32° you could have kept your stove running for 24 hrs. Plus, you could have burned unseasoned or softwood . The classic, old school outdoor wood boilers are much better as you don’t have to season or split small pieces requiring much more work.

    Hey there the idea of this series was to see the same "wood load" on two different style machines. I know I can burn dinosaur size logs and I love doing that LOL this video was to see how each machine handled the same wood with different heat demands!

    If you are burning green wood, yes it will burn longer, as the fire also has to boil out all the water in the wood -- but those are BTUs wasted. Any energy the fire is wasting removing water from the wood it is not using to heat your house. Having smaller seasoned wood also means a much smaller response time and the boiler will get up to temp much quicker. Although, with the classics design, using perfectly seasoned wood cut into good pieces might be overkill as the ability for a classic to absorb that energy is smaller, and a lot of that heat will shoot right out into the night sky. Which is why you always see Jay not overload the boiler and scrap the wood as far forward as he can.

  • @HomesteadJay

    @HomesteadJay

    Now theres someone whos paid attention lol yes you are 100 correct Rich. The only benefit to running small split wood in my classic is a fast recovery rate but I dont think thats a big deal (in my opinion). If the boiler cycles 10 or 20 times a day it doesnt matter. Theres no more or less "wear" on the machine if it cycles once or 100 times lol

    Had a eclassic 1400 for 12 years. The cleaning, creosote it made was horrible. The eclassic 1400 also used more electric with a blower and 3 solenoids. I switched to a cl6048 titanium model and love it. No more splitting or needing perfectly seasoned wood. Can also burn spruce, pine and poplar. The eclassic couldnt do that and would plug up and the fire would go out. The classic line is the way to go.

    I have a Heatmor CX 450 (2019) which is an old school boiler, no gasification. Less moving parts, less technology, less stupid (read expensive) shit to fix and you can throw in any kind of wood. I think gasification is for fussy people, people who lick bleach and scratch themselves at night and enjoy taking selfies in front of their pretty, perfectly split and stacked wood piles. The people who have gasification probably own a Tesla and we all know how the EV stupid shit is working out these days. I think the volume of wood consumption has alot to do with the design of the furnace. The straighter the line between the firebox and the stack the more wood you will burn because your heat is escaping faster. A good video, and like most of the comments it reaffirms to me i made the right choice with Old School. Thanks for your efforts.
