Ristar was a personal nostalgic favorite of mine. I have memories of playing it at someone's house and instantly falling in love with it. My tiny child brain had never seen anything so colorful and whimsical. I loved it all. Then I forgot about it for years and thought nothing of it, until the Sonic Mega Collection came out, and what bonus game was included? (in the US version, anyway) Just like that, middle school me fell in love with it all over again. I also showed it to my friends, praising it to hell and back they just looked at me like "what the hell is this and why was it included in a Sonic collection?". I like to think they just have bad taste. 😎👍

Playing Sonic 3 back in the day was like the peak of gaming in my life. In my head it still feels like this newest latest game because I remember it coming out after loving 1 and 2 so much. It feels like a recent release. I only learned years later that its only half a game and that you could stick it in the head of another cartridge. The music in that game is maybe the best ever in gaming Othwr story, I recently got a ps Vita and hacked it to emulate games, put every GB, GBC and GBA game on there, and I'm playing a game I had as a kid for GB, the Gradius game, interstellar assault I think it was called. Here in the UK it had a different name I think. I never had any clue as a kid you could get power ups, increase your speed and get bombs and lasers and a shield etc, so for years as a 5-10 year old on various types of gameboy I tried hundreds of times to beat it with no power ups! Never got that far. It's impossible. So now I'm gonna finally beat that game, my white whale, on my Vita. Using the power ups..... And save states yeah...

Rayman 1, and Rayman Designer (a level creator for Rayman 1). Not the best games I've played, but I like the challenge these games offer.

From the Atari 800 days, we have Miner 2049er and M.U.L.E.. Miner 2049er was the first Platformer I really got a handle of and has an odd quirk of how physics can not work with you. M.U.L.E. was the first digiatl board game and is a good way to get into hobby level Tabletop Euro and thematic games.

Lol, I never knew of the Master System version until I saw it on a wall for sale in Argos of all places. But it's interesting, they cut down the levels, and spears and helpers have been removed from the game.

Wonderboy in Monsterworld is my favorite childhood game as well. For me, it boils down to the fact that almost 30 years later my parents, who did not play video games, will still reference the ocarina notes. It was something we all did together, that I loved, and nothing can replace those kinds of memories. There are better games, but I didn't spend hours playing those with my parents. A few years ago for my 30th birthday my mother bought me a poster with the entire cast of the game on it. In my mind, there is no greater treasure than a video game you share with the people you look up to.

i keep coming back to this and it honestly makes my jaw drop seeing how the japanese version of the final boss is a cakewalk compared to the hell that awaited the rest of us...great job on the video!

I've never felt more relieved than I did beating the final boss of this game. It felt like I got really lucky, rather than pure skill, but it still felt good.

It was you who got me interested in this series & I can't help but say thank you. I watched both your old and new playthroughs of the game. Boy was I missing out. Ended up getting Dragon's Trap on Switch and I hope to play the next game that's out eventually when my backlog lets me. XD

This is probably one of my favourite games growing up as well. Took a while to complete, since I struggled with some of the bosses back then (as a young kid, the mushroom boss proved hard. How times have changed...) TY for the vid.

You know, that thing you said about the soundtrack is really interesting as I am very similar. Although I don’t have any nostalgia for really old games, but there is one song out of every song I know, which can make me cry with nostalgia. Of course, I experience emotions very unusually, so crying with nostalgia is more common than it is for most people, but it still requires very powerful nostalgia. Basically, the reason is because when I was still a child, in 2011, when Minecraft was huge, I wanted to play with the original Aether mod, but I never figured it out. At 10, I was just old enough to know I wanted the mod and where I could get it, but I was also just too young to install it properly. I remember spending 3 hours with my dad trying to install it, but it didn’t work. But I still watched KZreadrs play it, which actually lead into me discovering your channel in the recommended section of a video on the Aether done by a different British KZreadr. As a result of all of this, the song has remained in my memory as something of immense nostalgia, something I loved and wanted but could never get. But now, Aether 3 - Meadow, the song in question, can and will make me cry with nostalgia whenever I hear it, even when I’m just playing the game. I know it’s a very different situation to your story with Wonder Boy, but I thought it was worth mentioning considering the amount of nostalgia talk on this channel.

Agree 100% This game is gold, had a long lasting impact on me, such a great mechanic I wish they continued it more. The soundtrack is CLASS!

One of my favourite games ever. But that last boss is a nightmare. I think I’ve only beaten it once when I was about 15.

Although this is one of the worst performing videos on the channel i feel its one of if not the best, i keep coming back to this channel after years, ive grown up with you over the years and its crazy how much time has passed for this video alone, i wish i could go back to the first time i watched this video, you can tell in almost every part of this you have put so much love into these videos, hope you good luck in life man

This game was my very first RPG and I didn't even know it until I started playing other RPGs years and years later lol ahh...so many childhood memories

never got to play this one, i did remember playing wonder boy monsters lair at my aunts though and the dragons trap remake was one of the earliest switch games i remember getting, also picked up the excellent monster boy last year.

This is actually my 2nd favourite game of all time with no.1 being super metroid. Me and my best friend ever grew up playing Wonder boy in Monster land and Monster World. We love the cute artstyle and metroidvania gameplay. In recent years I got back into contacting my friend, we met up and had a nice date together, while talking about video games I brought up the wonder boy games and it's recently remakes, Monster boy and the ports on xbox 360 and switch. He got hit by the nostalgia lighting bolt and was desperate to play these games. He couldn't comprehend that there were actual new wonder boy games and he was so excited to go to my house to play all these games. He ended up staying over for 2 nights just to play these games man, while also trying out Hollow Knight, Super Meat Boy, Smash bros ultimate.

I really love this game. I recently bought the Sega Collection on Steam and played from the beginning. But man, to this day I remember when I was a kid and I would play this game for hours in a row. When I finally went to Puri Puri castle, and then to the swamps, I got stuck inside that dungeon. At the end, there's a room in which you need to trigger 4 levers in a specific order. If you do it correctly, a hole opens at the rightmost side and you fall through the floor to face the two rock bosses. However, if you don't get the correct order, the other 3 holes in the floor open up, and you just get send a bit backwards in the stage. I remember that I played there for DAYS and didn't manage to get it right. I simply didn't realize that there were torches that would burn a bit brighter whenever you started to get the order right. Because of this, I simply got stuck in that part. It was only months later, when I lent the game to a friend of mine that he actually showed me that all I needed to do was pay attention to the torches. After that moment, I was struck with mixed feelings. On the one hand I felt quite stupid, but on the other side I was astonished and happy because I could keep up playing this game that I love like it was a whole new game, since I simply didn't know what adventures were still waiting for me. Anyway, great video, and I share a lot of the love you feel about this game too.

Thanks so much for reviewing this game! I only played it about a year ago and it's probably my second favorite in the series. It's super underrated and aged very well, I'm surprised more people haven't talked about this game! Great video!

I'm pretty sure that chronologically Wonder Boy in Monster World comes right after The Dragon's Trap so it's kinda amusing you mention the latter at the end of a video for the former 😄 I brought The Dragon's Trap for Switch early this year and really enjoyed it, then lent it to my friend and he enjoyed it so much that even after completing my physical copy he brought the digital copy, and he's a notorious skin flint so that's high praise for a game (the only issue is that it's one of the odd Switch titles that isn't seen the same when physical and digital so the save doesn't carry over).

Yeah I did wonder about doing these in "lore order" but I thought i'd start with the one that meant the most to me first!

Yeah ... I knew about the hidden Charmstone dealer ... because I pressed UP on every single floor tile I could find in the game ... and on each crack between every two tiles too, for good measure I have no regrets

Dude I love this review, this is SOOOOOOOOOO relatable. Also I loved the idea with the Sphinx, such an outlier of a boss, was amazing, I felt so smart for beating it as a kid. 13:23 wait what??

As someone that played it for the first time two years ago I can confirm it's a great game. Though I didn't run into any of the problems mentioned as I talk to every NPC at least once and I tend to try and find avery secret before proceeding (on the other hand sometimes I can spend an hour trying to get something that requires a power up that can be obtained later). I concur on the final boss being a nonsensical difficulty spike (I had to read a guide to find some extra magic to beat it). I got it for my old Mega Drive 2 when prices weren't as bad as they are today for original CiB copies. Back when my Mega Drive 2 was new there wasn't much choice (I had DJ Boy, Sonic 2, Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair, a few Disney and Looney Toons platformers and a WRPG I couldn't make sense of because I couldn't read english at the time) on what to buy where I lived so when all the retrogame youtube induced nostalgia hit me I dug it out from the closet it was stored in and went on a bit of an eBay spree and this is one of the games I'm glad I could rediscover.

Excellent review mate. I love the Wonderboy games too and WB in Monster World is definitely one of my favourite ever Megadrive games as well.

I'm like that with my old Super Mario 64 cart. I've had it for as long as I can remember, it's also the first game that was truly MY game. All the other games I've had before then where hand me down from my dad or my mom. My dad gave me Sonic, my mom gave me Diablo 2 and my grandma even gave me some of my dad's other games that he forgot at her house when he moved out. Namely the All Star Mario game with 4 games in one for the good old SNES. But, it was with the N64 that I truly became a gamer and the first game was Super Mario 64.

I never had the Wonderboy games on the Mega Drive but I did have the Master System versions (probably still do somewhere) and I was awful at this one. I have more memories of Dragon's Trap which I used to play all the time so when I found out they were doing a remake of it I was so hyped and when I finally got to play the new version all that nostalgia came back and I loved it. My personal favourite childhood game though was Dragon's Crystal again on the Master System, a rougelike dungeon crawler with the single catchiest song in video game history, at least to me, to this day the song from the first 10 levels still rings in my ears at the slightest provocation.

I'd say the hidden doors mentioned don't have no indication whatsoever. The ones underwater you do see the chests with no way leading them in, alarming you there has to be a hidden door somewhere nearby, then it's just a matter of looking up obvious corners like the end of tight hallways. The shop in town has an NPC telling you about it, so I took 5 minutes to press up on every step in town (could've been much less if I had just looked at the center of each individual wall). There are two doors however, that felt impossible to me and I had to look them up. The first was in the last castle. I was completely stuck, knowing I had to get small somehow. So I checked every step of that final room for a hidden door to no avail. I would have never guessed that there was a hidden door but in the PREVIOUS room. That just seemed cruel. The other one is the heart chest in the center of the sea. Like the other underwater chests I tried looking everywhere close by for a door, this time trying at every possible step, including on land above the area where it was. But nope, I started fearing that the door was hidden in a completely different part of the game, and sure enough my fears were justified.

OH YEAH WONDER BOY 5 (Wonder Boy In Monster World 😃)

This was my favorite game when I was like 6

omg the underwater area, I was stuck in there for 10 years. I got past it eventually, by pure accident, but fuck it, I got that far without knowing a single bit of English. And I got all the way to the dragon village, with bare minimum of English knowledge. I've since beaten the game but like, those were some difficult areas. Pygmy armour, not even knowing what I was looking for, or what I had to do, that was rough! I had found 3 of the 4 pieces, but I only learned of that years later.

There was also a alternative to Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap on the Turbografx-16, called Dragon's Curse. It was also the same game, but with a palette swap. That game was actually available on the Wii Shop about a decade ago when it was still online.

This was an incredibly hard game for me to get into after playing through wonder boy 2 and 3. I don't like how slow it is.

Man my grandma randomly picked this up a flea market or something and I loved it. Except I couldn't seem to beat the final boss but once.

I know this is late and all but.. My favorite childhood game is FFII on the SNES. Yes, it is technically 4, but the cart says FFII. I am well aware of its flaws and still just love it to death because it was the first video game I ever took seriously, I barely remember the NES days before it, and I got it from my grandma and would play it while visiting her, so it has that association in my mind. It will always hold a special place in my heart. Plus, it has a spoony Bard. And it has forever tilted me against Bards. lol I do still have a working SNES, and a Genesis, and also have this game (Wonder Boy in Monster World) on the genesis and it still *mostly* works. My Genesis controller is starting to fade, unfortunately, and the jump button has lost about 50% sensitivity. Just makes it more challenging, eh!

3:35 What about Sonic the Hedgehog? Have you heard of that series in which you get shoes as a power up which allows you to walk faster?

I probably should have been a bit more specific to action rpg style games but you are not wrong I suppose :P

Having nostalgia for games is always nice. I also grew up with the genesis in my first few years, it was my dad's when he was younger, probably like a teen. i eventually moved on from that system though, and as such, we cant find it again, my dad says we might have given it away, but i think its in the basement somewhere. I never had WBiMW, or even knew it existed until i bought the sega genesis collection from steam, but I got the chance to try it and thought it was fun, monster boy and the cursed kingdom also seems interesting. The games I have the most nostalgia for on that system besides the sonic games are probably Puggsy, a physics based puzzle platformer, and Wiz 'N' Liz, a more frantic arcade-style game. I highly recommend giving both a try, they are made by the same company who made lemmings, Psygnosis and have Easter eggs of each others' games.

If you talk about Monster World IV for this channel, I hope you do that game justice by playing the official 2012 English release, and even redo the Let's Play for it.

I have a similar nostalgia for Rayman 1 (DOS) and Rayman Designer. I have a ton of fond memories of figuring-out and overcoming challenges in that game, I've gotten so good I can beat the game without the lives code and without using any continues. Does this game have problems? Oh yes it does! Band Land, and Eat at Joe's especially. The lives and continue system is also a bit weird, I think you're supposed to save your continues until you desperately need them (since you have a limited amount), but no one seems to do it that way, and the ice physics (although fun while going fast) are just the worst ice physics I've seen. But for as many problems that these games have, I still enjoy playing them to relieve stress (weird, I know). The only other weird thing is that I have nostalgia for a game I've played in 2016.

With just getting a genesis mini a few days ago, I think its finally the time to give this game a shot! If I really like it Ill get a copy, but the genesis mini is great to try a ton of classics for cheap(ish)

I remember playing this in High School. I couldn't understand why this game looked and sounded so good. Yet, 90% of the other Sega games I played looked and sounded like complete shit.

There was no arcade version of this particular game, although there were Wonder Boy games in arcades.

I have no nostalgia for this game at all and tried it a couple of times, once very recently. As far as things go with the music and graphics/character design, I totally agree this game is charming af. I got kind of fed up with all of the StarTropics syndrome stuff (must talk to everyone/random npc to unlock next path) and sometimes exploring new areas only to find dead ends is a bit annoying, though I think it's a good game in spite of these issues. That said, Sonia is probably the worst teacher in the history of video games (here's ocarina melody #1, ok practice: NO! THAT WAS AWFUL! NOT EVEN CLOSE! Ok that was very good, on to #2. Oh, you didn't write that down? TOO BAD NERD! Git gud at memorizing before this information that's essential for progressing is gone FOREVER!).

There's nothing wrong with loving a game despite its flaws. I reviewed this one last year and was pretty unimpressed, but I wouldn't begrudge anyone their happy memories.
