Women's 5000m Final | World Athletics Championships Doha 2019

Спорт

Welcome to the World Athletics Watch Party, join the conversation on Twitter with our hashtag #WatchWorldAthletics.
In the women’s 5000m Hellen Obiri retained her title in a championship record of 14:26.72 in a pulverising race that saw eleven of those athletes strung out behind her breaking their personal bests.
The Kenyan was suitably rewarded for a run of utter determination from the moment she took the lead towards the end of the second lap - a lead she never relinquished.
Her team-mate Margaret Kipkemboi came through to overtake Konstanze Klosterhalfen in the home straight for silver clocking a personal best of 14:27.49, with the tall, thin German taking a richly earned bronze in 14:28.43.

It’s not that they wanted her to win or had any favoritism towards her, it’s just that she was doing really well running with the East Africans from the very beginning to the end. Notice how the rest of the Americans and Europeans were all the way back? She was the only one who could run with and at times challenged the East Africans and that’s a huge accomplishment considering the total East African dominance in the distance running. It’s a given that the East Africans were going to sweep the medals from the very beginning but Koko won a historic medal for her country. Kenya has won medals at this event countless times, this was the first time for Germany. That’s why they were excited, because it was a historic run from the German. If a Kenyan or Ethiopian were to compete in the 100m or 200m, these same commentators would be excited for them as well because it would be something historic.
