"Women of Ireland", or "Mná na hÉireann" in Irish, is a song composed by Seán Ó Riada (1931--1971). The poem, on which the music is based, was written by Peadar Ó Dornín (?1704--1769).
Filmed at the Highwayman in Kidlington. one of the few pubs left to encourage live acoustic music. they have a live music session on the third Sunday of every month.

This is what my father chose for his funeral. My brother refused because it was 'too sad'. I also choose it for my funeral but I guess he'll be playing Michael Jackson instead.

The word Scoti (or Scotti) was first used by the Romans. It is found in Latin texts from the 4th century describing an Irish group which raided Roman Britain. It came to be applied to all the Gaels. It is not believed that any Gaelic groups called themselves Scoti in ancient times, except when writing in Latin.

I love The Chieftains, and their rendition is the first I heard (in Barry Lyndon). I think this is a superior version (no arguments; it's just, like, my opinion, man). Fewer instruments, no 'lush' sound, no whistles--just a quiet, wistful arrangement.
