Women in More Than 50 Countries Set to Strike Today on International Women's Day

democracynow.org - Today is International Women’s Day, and thousands of women are staging a one-day strike in what’s been dubbed a Day Without a Woman. The impact of the strike is already being felt in the United States. In Virginia, the entire public school system of Alexandria is closed today after 300 women requested the day off. Some schools are also closing in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and in New York City. The U.S. Women’s Strike was called by organizers of the Women’s March on Washington, the largest nationwide day of protest after an inauguration in U.S. history. And women in the United States are not alone. Women in more than 50 countries are expected to take part in their own strikes. The International Women’s Strike effort was launched in October 2016 after women in Poland, South Korea, Argentina and Sweden organized strikes to fight issues from the criminalization of abortion to femicide. For more, we speak with Tithi Bhattacharya, associate professor of South Asian history at Purdue University. She is one of the national organizers of today’s Women’s Strike.

Women took the day off yesterday.....our office has never been more productive. No candy crush, no gossip, no back-stabbing.

The power grid would crash, so no electricity. There'd be no flights, since very few pilots or ground maintenance. No emergency surgeries (or very few), no car or home repairs. It'd be funny.

This is so pathetic. Women with actual jobs won't be taking the day off, I can assure you that.

The Trump Administration approved one sale to Saudi Arabia, where Donald Trump has eight businesses registered, as one if its first official acts. Donald Trump approved further weapons sales to Saudi Arabia this week.

At least the person who upvoted me, possibly others as well, and arguably you. People care what others think, we are a social species. If you really don't think so, then there would have been no point in you expressing that -making that statement fundamentally hypocritical. Anyone agreeing with either of us will just reinforce the error in your statement. Had you not thought this through?

I'm not sure whether to laugh at the absurdity if you're just fooling around or, if you're serious, be concerned about someone possibly suffering from an undiagnosed psychological disorder. I know you won't take this seriously if that is the case, but in the off chance someone you know is also trying to help you by suggesting the same thing maybe this will provide a bit of reinforcement. You aught to see a doctor. I've seen bi-polar disorder do some pretty messed up things to people's heads, and they acted a lot like... that.

Women would do well to spend their time to continue to educate ourselves on our Constitution, our Bill of Rights, and upholding the Declaration of Independence. True Patriotism has nothing to do with War nor National Defense (which Women also serve a purpose for), it's the fact that we have the obligation to leave this country better than when we found it for our children and grandchildren. We Women can contribute to restoring the American Government to its Constitutional restraints, Women can definitely contribute to restoring America's capacity to have a healthy Free Market Economy that every Woman take full advantage of. Most importantly, the best way Women can really celebrate International Women's Day, we have some responsibility to encourage the understanding of the Right of Self-Determination for everyone including in Sovereign countries the United States may have a disagreement with. The United States needs to genuinely respect that Right for other Sovereign countries the same as we would want. Women are resilient and have contributed immensely to this country's greatness, Women also have the ability to restore America's core values and Constitutional principles.

EVERY MOTHER risks her life to bring new life into this world n should be honored n compensated just as soldiers who fight wars. MARCH 9 i'm adding this to my comment bcuz of the amount of misunderstandings that ppl assumed rather than read words i wrote. it is plain simple English i did not say i want a medal or am a hero i didnot say i am better than a man or soldiers being ''honored'' to me means being respected and appreciated when i said ''compensated'' i mean the ''sperm donator'' must pay money to support a child he created
