Melanie admits she is addicted to both physical and digital hoarding. She says her home is so filled with clutter, she can barely walk through it, and she stores over 100,000 videos, photos, selfies and screenshots on her phone. Melanie says she has a feeling of missing out if she doesn’t constantly take a photo or video of what she sees or collect every knickknack that tempts her. Melanie’s mother, Alisa, says her daughter is highly intelligent, a college graduate and has traveled the world, but claims that Melanie also uses her intelligence to control and manipulate others. Melanie’s best friend, Austin, says Melanie must stop trying to fill a void in her life by collecting free things.

OCD is completely awful and can take over completely. I was under the impression that OCD was about actions, like having to close a door so many times etc, until my son was diagnosed with OCD. He experienced ruminating thoughts about losing his memory, it doesn't sound that bad but it was dreadful, it was all he could think about every minute of the day and night, it didn't matter what I said to help him, he just couldn't get out of that cycle. I had to take time off work because he couldn't be alone, he was 17 and we even shared a bed through this because he literally couldn't be alone. He was put on Prozac and that helped him, along with seeing a psychologist. OCD isn't a joke, it can literally drive people crazy. I really hope this woman can get the help she needs. I don't particularly like dr Phil but I hope she gets more out of this then he does at least.

Absolutely agree. I think this is more of a case of someone with a personality disorder using another diagnosis to justify her bad behavior towards others and avoid accountability. It feels more like she keeps attending conferences or groups to become more knowledgeable and aware of how OCD works rather than using the support or knowledge to actually help herself. She seems proud of having OCD rather than perceiving it as actual painful struggle, which I feel someone with OCD actually display. She seems very attention-seeking, narcissistic, manipulative, and controlling. And Dr. Phil shut her down; I'm glad.

Hi, have you watched her other clips on this show, dr Phil is manipulative and condescending, if this woman was hosting the show there would be so much awareness and education going on.Dr Phil hasn't allowed that. She seems 'proud' by smiling because shes being so so patient and smiling awkwardly because shes realised what the show is really about. Regarding how she's using the groups sometimes it starts with actually trying to understand what's going on first, becoming comfortable and then finding solutions, it's a process. She doesn't know what her options are. Her family and Dr Phil need to also adapt and help and support. And no, Dr Phil, not everybody has a bit of OCD (d being 'disorder' therefore distress).

Saying everyone has a little ocd is so damaging to the stigma Dr Phil...this is like saying “everyones depressed!” or “everyone has adhd!” no, everyone can be anxious or particular yes, but having ocd is separate entirely, you dont have a little ocd you either have it or you dont and it is serious its not normal if you are worried if you have it seek a professional opinion :) I believe in you and you are strong.

  • @ByeByeBelly

    @ByeByeBelly

    3 жыл бұрын

I guess we all have the capability of being anxious, of trying to control our environment/ourselves/others, of associating random things with more serious outcomes or concepts, of doing repetitive actions to attempt to ease anxiety. I have severe OCD but my compulsions became mostly mental as I got older. I never had what looked like classic OCD. I do things like drive home and make myself late to work to check the stove or the locks again, things like that. I also exhaust myself with cleaning and do a lot of hand washing but the hand washing is normal in my industry of work. But I'm more concerned with contamination, for good reason because people at work have made me very ill and caused long term damage to my body. But my physical compulsions don't consume hours a day. However I still have constant mental compulsions and rumination and severe anxiety. I also have a history of agoraphobia that went hand in hand with the OCD which I still struggle with in some ways and I now have PTSD later in life. So mine is like a ball of internal anxiety and ne reacting to it constantly but I can behave normally around people and they think I'm fine. But the problem is I end up having nervous breakdowns and being hospitalized etc as time goes on. Psychological treatment hasn't yet helped. I mean, I try to be positive but this level of anxiety ruins your life and my state of mind is a type of torture. But I still would agree that everyone has a hint of obsessive compulsive qualities, some more than others, because anxiety and repetition are human emotions and traits, we just have it to a heightened level where it's considered a disorder and really negatively impacts our lives. Well that's my opinion anyway

Dr. Phil telling viewers that "everybody has a little OCD in them" is incredibly irresponsible. OCD is far from wanting to be organized or clean or to have things a certain way. Following that up by /barely/ emphasizing how disruptive the actions/anxieties of somebody with clinical OCD is to their lives does not reverse his previous improper representation of it.

It wasn't 'incredibly irresponsible' at all, you just want to be specialized as if other people having obsessive compulsive tendancies en mass would take away from the utter disruption and strife you feel. Hint: it wouldn't. Sharing a label doesn't hurt your narrative. He at the very most made a misnomer and you can get over it easily.

@@lexio4395 Saying everybody has a little *insert debilitating mental illness here* in them does nothing but trivialize the struggles people with those illnesses actually go through. If he wanted to tell people that the habits or preferences they have that the mainstream compares to OCD were not at all like that, he should have make it explicitly clear that those are not traits of OCD at all. OCD is stereotyped as being the person who is extremely clean, or has strong preferences on organization, or a distaste for things like cupboard doors being closed. However, the truth is that those trivial desires for organization are in everybody and are NOT something that OCD suffers struggle with in the way we do. OCD is flipping a lightswitch on and off 100 times because you genuinely feel that if you don't your family will die. Or washing your hands with near scalding water for 30 minutes because you feel like you will actually be harmed if you don't. Its not "noo, I hate that those pencils aren't all the same length!!" or "my roommate never closes the bathroom cupboard". People who do not have OCD, or have not lived with somebody who does, can never understand how harmful it actually is.

@@AuDHD99 A few things with this. First, I do not have OCD. However, I do have multiple diagnoses for a number of other mental illnesses. My twin sister, however, DOES have OCD. The irresponsibility of it is due to two things; the making of a blanket statement that is catchy for the sake of television and the trivialization of a condition he KNOWS is debilitating and serious to its sufferers. Regular people do not have "obsessive compulsive tendencies". They simply don't. People with OCD and OCPD do, because that is the nature of their disorder. Do people have habits? Preferences? Obsessions? Of course. Are some people more irked by things like lack of organization that others? Absolutely. Do people with those traits have OCD? No. That is not what OCD is. This is not just about misusing a label. This is about perpetuating widespread misunderstanding of a very serious mental condition. Everything somebody decides to say "omg, I *need* my pencils organized by color, I'm soooooo OCD" they are diminishing the actual weight the diagnosis holds for the people who actually have it. Mental disorders are not a fun quirk or buzzword or lable people can just slap on themselves to make themselves unique or for the laughs. These illnesses destroy lives. They kill people.

Pro tip: when Dr. Phil says "what are you willing to do to accomplish XYZ?" Your only answer should be "Anything and Everything. I know I haven't been taking the necessary steps before but I'm tired of living like this. I need to change and I may not be ready to change... but I'm going to start today."

I felt sorry for this girl. She was reaching out & clearly her laughter was a coping mechanism & not because she found her situation comical... Dr Phil said that he wouldn't enable her controlling tendencies by controlling the situation himself! That doesn't help resolve the situation it just shifts blame. Not the most professional episode I've watched. Dr Phil gave her advice about living in the present and taking baby steps. Though in my opinion with such a massive life limiting illness of that magnitude a more intense (coping skills & mental health plan) is needed. Dr Phil should have put his ego to one side & offered her some professional help & a support group.

I thought I knew what OCD was, I didn't know there were sub classifications such as hoarding. This is exactly what I struggle with, I have struggled with it my entire life since I was very young until now into my adulthood and have never been able to get it under control. I am fully aware that it's my responsibility to make the necessary changes and turn my life around but for some reason (or several reasons) I just can't seem to do it. I have other health issues that are preventing me from making changes to my life but this video was enlightening because I never thought I could have OCD since I'm not super organized and and super tidy.

I’m confused because at one point her mother said something about how she forces people to wear their masks and things of that sort, but she is on here without a mask. i understand they more than likely quarantine before coming on the show and they sit far apart, but it just doesn’t completely make sense to me to be super weary with people not wearing them, but she’s on here without it.

It sounds like she's using the group to justify her OCD... that it's ok and that there are others like her. She seems very proud of her OCD and doesn't look like she truly wants to change. I think it's a big identity for her, she wouldn't have anything 'special' if she doesn't have it.

3 things I am OCD about is people not using a butter knife (which leaves lines in the butter), Putting used butter back into the tub ie scraping the butter off toast and then putting it back into the tub, My wardrobe has to go from white on the left to black on the right.

It causes high anxiety levels and meltdowns so much so that if I'm at someone's home I will go hungry if I'm unable to make my own sandwich but only after I have inspected their butter tub. I'm not trying to belittle or upset anyone, it's just my quirk.

As a nail biter and an inner lip biter, I can kind of empathize with this chick. Like I get infected hangnails a couple of times a year. I know it's terribly unhealthy to do. I can't stop doing it. I've even put on creams that smell and taste revolting, and it doesn't even slow it down. So I can understand how it's hard to stop a super bad habit loop.
