thanks for posting this. for people without great hearing, though, the water sound in the background is distracting and makes understanding you more difficult. thanks again.

Hi Ron, excellent video! On your Yellow set-up blocks #1&2, does the projection have to be 2" to work, or could it be the recommended 1.75"? And also why did you choose 2"? Was that for the convenience of a round number? Thanks, and stay safe.

Will it work with 1.75 projection? Yes. Will the angles be the same? No. I was taught that 2" was the standard. I never heard different until I meant Doug Thompson who uses 1.75".

Why are most all turners using Vari Grind One. I have Vari Grind Two and can't find any illustrations how to set it up. I purchased it a number of years ago and don't remember how I set it up initially. marv

Marvin, excellent question! The Vari Grind 2 is designed to limit side to side movement in an effort to avoid turners from sliding off the side of the wheel. If your tool slipped off the side of the wheel there would be the possibility of your fingers making contact with the grinding wheel and you could get injured. It is a safety thing. However, trying to get a long grind, Ellsworth type, can be very difficult with narrow wheels since you can't swing the side of the gouge either to the right or the left. The same is true for larger spindle gouges with fingernail grinds. All tool holding fixtures follow the same principles with only three variables. Tool Stick-Out, Leg Angle, and arm distance from the wheel. If you know the leg angle for the gouge holding fixture (in your case the VariGrind 2) and the nose angle you want, you can figure out the proper distance from the wheel. As an example: Bowl Gouge with at 60-degree nose angle (fairly blunt-cuts well and doesn't catch easily) uses a 2" stick out. I use a 45-degree leg angle on my tool holding fixture. I can establish a flat on the nose of the gouge at 60 degrees using the platform. I check this angle with a protractor. Adjust the leg until the flat rests firmly and completely against the grinding wheel and that is your distance. My gouge setting blocks give you that distance using two firm points of contact in abut 5 seconds without the need for all of the trial and error and messing around. That is why I sell thousands of sets each year. Using them you can get nose angles of 45 to 60 degrees. I even have a setup block specifically for Stuart Batty's famous 40-40 grind using either the VariGrind 1 or VariGrind 2. They work equally well with both and are very inexpensive. You can get more info at www.ronbrownsbest.com under the sharpening category. Thanks for asking. Ron

What about the verigrind 2 owners?

I don't have a solution for Verigrind 2. I find it very difficult to achieve a proper Ellsworth grind with the 2 so I avoid using it personally. Ron
