I used to be on a Crew, you might think it is safe but I have been told that Crew Teams have the Highest Accidental Death Rates than any other sport.

Lucky the oncoming boat broke in half or it could have killed the poor chap in seat 8.

In theory, they exist because a guy called Edward Campbell died in 1888 in a “bumps race” in Cambridge, after a bow pierced his heart. Poor guy, but thanks to him we have them!

Not really, he was squeezed into the bank by Merton after bumping them.

He was not. Ther's plenty of space to steer to the right. All coxes are instructed to keep going and clear the racing line. This cox does neither.

As a sculler owning my own boat, I cannot understand why these races wilfully cause countless £1000s worth of damage. Aside from banger racing, I cannot think of another sport that involves deliberate destruction of perfectly good expensive sports equipment. No wonder there's a general misconception of rowing being a monied entitled sport of the elite.
