Absolutely correct. Young people are our conscience. They have the duty and the right to raise their voices peacefully.

Yes, our younger generations need to express themselves and we need to listen to them. However, these students need to form opinions based upon investigation and understanding and poll after poll shows a great deal of ignorance concerning the Israel/Hamas war. Too many are chanting slogans with no real knowledge of what they mean. And too many, as has been shown, don’t even know why they are protesting. And shutting down the Universities for other students is simply wrong and not really peaceful protesting in my opinion.

The difference between these protesters and those who were protesting the Vietnam war is that these protesters have no skin in the game, with the exception of Palestinian protesters. During Vietnam, we were subject to the draft, and everyone was terrified of being sent to Vietnam. Many of us also opposed the war on moral grounds, but in retrospect it's quite clear that much if not most of the opposition to that war was grounded in self-centered reasons. We badly need a reinstatement of the draft so that young people and their friends & families start rebelling against all these U.S. wars of empire. Without a draft, these demonstrations will peter out, more likely sooner rather than later. The establishment ended the draft exactly for this reason, and they knew what they were doing. It's way past time that we change this. Of course it will be a big uphill battle, not only fighting the establishment, but fighting people morally opposed to the draft (at least those people have a legitimate argument, though I disagree with it), and fighting people who just selfishly don't want to be or have their friends & relatives subject to a draft, but it's what needs to be done to stop all this war-making.

Our reactiionary political class are inciting this police violence and should be held accountable. I think they're sending a message to workers and the rest of the population that challenges their war and austerity agenda.

It's great that this young generation finally woke up to get interested in what's going on in the world and around them. It's ironic that it took events on the other half of the world and they have been silent about issues at home for decades. One can only hope that this rebirth of student activism won't go away after Gaza. There are plenty problems in the West to protest about.
