Wolfdog Out & About Socializing & Desensitizing Meeting Strange People & Things

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Wolfdogs have an innate fear of people and strange sights and sounds. So keeping them happy and desensitized is an ongoing process. Wolfdogs are not right for most people. They are a huge responsibility

I had a wolf dog named Cole. He was amazing, i miss him. We ended up giving him up to a big farm towards the end of his life. His owner married my cousin and we all lived together with my aunt, uncle, cousin and her two kids with me and my grandmother at the back addition. I took him everywhere and some people got nasty and dainty(we're in CT) which was unfortunate. But mostly people were kind and willing to understand that its ok to have him around. I never understood why people were so upset, he was such a good boy. Time started to pass though, and his owner, my cousin in law, started to succumb to addiction and there were problems. Cole became our dog, the owner was just MIA which was really sad to see. Years later the pooch became over weight and i had moved so his exercise and overall mental health and fitness became reliant on me. He became more agitated at other animals when he was originally so tolerant of ALL animals Cats and other dogs so We ended up getting him a good home on a farm and the original owner died.

@@dhand34 I never said anything about “containment.” I live in a rural area and my dogs aren’t “lawn ornaments” and they aren’t contained. They run free on acres of forest with a running creek, and they get plenty of socialization with humans and other dogs from my friends and neighbors. It’s weird that you interpreted my comment as “you should keep him penned up in a yard.” People in rural areas usually don’t have fenced-in yards, and I guarantee a part-WOLF is much more comfortable out in nature away from large human settlements. He’s not a freakin golden retriever. “Desensitizing” is just a nice way of saying, “forcing him into uncomfortable situations until he tolerates them better.” Sounds like a great life for him. 🙄

Agreed. Socializing my son (Growler) is a constant effort. He is cautious around new people (the wolf thing), but his memory of the ones he has met is very good, making it easier for him to adapt to them. Despite his caution towards new people and the jump greeting, he is very sweet and just needs to be around them for awhile to get acclimated to them. I will have him with me later this year on the Appalachian Trail
