In areas where brown bear and grey wolf populations overlap, bears will target wolfpacks and steal their food. Also if a bear stumbles upon a wolf den it will with certainty dig it up and kill the cubs. Not only bears but also, mountain lions, snow leopards, tigers and hyenas will all kill wolves if they get the chance.

No the one in the very back is the leader. Weakest in front, strongest behind weakest, then women and children, then strongest again, then leader at the very last. It’s pretty genius.. it’s so the weakest and oldest set the pace.. the strongest follow behind to protect , then women and children behind strongest in the safest spot of the pack, then strongest again to protect from a rear attack, and the leader is the last to make sure nobody gets left behind.

Conservationist here! The whole "Alpha" thing only exists in artificial packs created in captivity. In the wild, they act more like human families. The pack is led by the mom and dad, and the rest of the pack is their children. Sometimes those kids move out and start their own family and may occasionally rejoin their old pack. It is really fascinating to me.

Seen this before back in 98, they were closing the distance on a small herd of elk in deep snow. The leader would lead so far then step to the side and the whole pack of 14 would keep going and then it joined back in the end of the line and the next leader would step aside and do the same after it lead for a distance. That was the coolest thing I ever seen witnessing wolves. I’m sure they took 1 or 2 down we just didn’t get to see that part as the elk ran over the mtn front and back into the wilderness and those wolves never slowed down.

They would not have been able to take more than one down. They don't even always have the ability to take one down. There are quite a few times when an elk will either get away or will actually turn and fight. It has even been documented that elk have killed pack members when they fight back. So it is quite impossible to take down more than 1 at a time. That is so amazing you got to see that, though! We have been studying the wolves here in Yellowstone since their reintroduction in the 90's. Absolutely one of my favorite species to study.

Typically, the Alpha/leader is the last wolf in the pack to keep track of everyone in front of him and to also ensure that no one is getting left behind. The pack will only move us fast as it’s the slowest members.

The Pack Leader for those wondering is the last one in the back. The leader trails the back to keep formation and navigate the whole pack. Being Able to see everything : howl if danger is near, halt the pack and regroup.

For you wondering, no wolf packs don't have pack leaders. The myth was based on a study on captive wolves and does not represent the behavior of the wild animals.

Actually older males take the front so if the pack is attacked they go first. Females in the middle with any pups. The alpha takes the rear so he can see everything

@@Michael-Angh because the pack is separated by ranks. The one that turned around is probably the alpha female watching the elder and the younger wolves in the middle. The warriors and the fighters are up front to clear the way of danger. The elderly, young and females are in the middle with the alpha in the back looking forward and occasionally turning around to make sure no one is following. Damn you can legit ask the same thing to Google dude!
