Woke attacks on Winston Churchill are libel & lies | Churchill defended

To many, Winston Churchill is the man who saved not only Britain but the world from Nazi tyranny. But to some, Churchill represents the evils of the British Empire: racism, colonisation and violence. The wartime prime minister’s statue in Parliament Square was even tarred with the words “racist” after the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020. So, hero or villain? Steven Edginton is joined by Churchill’s biographer, Andrew Roberts to decide. Watch the full video above, or listen to History Defended on your podcast app.

    Churchill was quite proud of his imperialist positions over the long span of his career. he was also a proponent of the extension of Britain's colonies. he found himself at odds with a different kind of imperialist, which doesn't erase his own motivations or behavior.

    I was in a bookshop this week and right front and centre on prominent display (not far from a university.... ) were two sensationalist anti-churchill books that on further research appear to be one sided hatchet jobs full of bullsh1t, one by a well known far leftie that I've seen on the BBC and knew from memory to be an ar*ehole. It's depressing as I'm guessing the bookshop know their target audience and I'm sure a certain type of student will buy that sort of book then believe they are incredibly clever repeating said bullsh1t, as it makes them appear to be more knowledgeable, edgy, and cool. And of course attacking Britain or anything that makes anyone proud to be British never goes out of fashion with a certain sort, it's never BEEN more trendy since Brexit made a cross section of society lose their collective marbles in petulant rage. Sadly there seems to be no comeback for books that contain disinformation once the person targeted is dead?

    The only sustainable significant allegation against Churchills character is that his book of 1948 was deceitful, and that his deceitful summary of Chamberlains thoughts and actions proved Chamberlain right as Health Minister that the Chancellor of the Exchequer would take all the credit for the legislation if he had his way. This is the question concerning Churchill, only ignorance of history has generated appearance that his imperial arrogance is the question we should be asking when examining whether part of his legacy was the result of character defect.

    Diary entry of General Alan Brooke, 10th of September 1944 "We had another meeting with Winston at 12 noon. He was again in a most unpleasant mood. Produced the most ridiculous arguments that Operations could be sped up so as to leave us an option till December before having to withdraw any forces from europe! He knows no details, has only got half the picture in his mind, talks absurdities and makes my blood boil to listen to his nonsense. I find it hard to remain civil. And the wonderful thing is that 3/4 of the world imagine that Winston Churchill is one of the Strategists of History, a second Marlborough, and the other 1/4 have no conception what a public menace he is and has been throughout this war! It is far better that the world should never know, and never suspect, the feet of clay of that otherwise superhuman being. Without him, England was lost for a certainty, with him, England has been on the verge of disaster time and again."

    All but Churchill were ready to submit to Hitler. Lord Halifax, who it was assumed would be PM, even made in roads with Mussolini to get a treaty with Hitler. Churchill later had him under house arrest for the duration. Only Churchill thought we should fight to the bitter end if needed. America was as pro Germany as it was UK and could have gone either way. In fact the UK secret service did a little con job on America to influence them into coming on our side, that's down to Churchill. So who else could have saved the world and Democracy? Nobody! Churchill was the man in the right place at the right time. His life experience led him to the moment. My dad served in the Royal Navy from 39 to the end. My mother made rifles and bren at Royal Ordnance Fazakerley. Churchill gave them hope to carry on when everything seemed lost. There's not been a PM who could do that since. I read that Churchill's policies exacerbated the Bengal Famine that killed nearly 2.1-3 million Indian natives. I also read that Churchill allowed the RMS Lusitania to travel through the Celtic Sea without any convoy knowing it would get destroyed by a German U Boat hoping the event would encourage the Americans to join in the war. So to me Churchill doesn't represent anything pleasant. He put the Empire first but that was a waste of time because we no longer have the Empire.

    Dont generalize this woke label.. It is just a way to ridicule young people, for trying out new ideas.. just like hippies it has its flaws.. but without experimentation we simply become slaves of the past.. including all the worlds history.. I love churchill, so i dont really care about his mistakes.. i love him for taking an in that time ridiculous stand.. did he pull a lot of people into war? Sure . But this was in response to fascism not in support.. which means he went against his character and the english character of that time which justified all kinds of suffering in favor of the british empire, including racism and the superiority complex which lives even today towards tribal people. So i value him not for who he was but for his potential for good and how he chose to go with his heart.. i dont care about hitler and the british empire that whole shitshow.. all that powerplay had to go down the drain.. but all of it doesnt matter now. The nations of africa and south america can see their own value, take a stand.. they can grow out of their past as churchill did even if for a moment... As the global north feeds on their resources, they can learn the political game and play out the neo imperialists out against each other and in this create more resilience against neo colonialism.. and space for creating a self sustainable space for themselves

    He knew the Empire was finished when INDIA GOT FREE OF BRITISH RULE!!! DRUNK EMPIRE BUILDER!!

  • @Crispvs1

    @Crispvs1

    2 жыл бұрын

    Actually what finished the empire was the fact that the Second World War had bankrupted Britain, meaning we had to go to the Americans and beg for a loan to rebuild Britain. The Yanks demanded that we grant independence to all our colonies (most of whom were not even asking for it) as the price for that loan. This was because they have a national myth, which is not supported by the evidence, that they gained their independence by throwing off a tyrannical oppressor in the form of Britain. They therefore have the idea that empire is by its very nature, tyrannical, which is a subjective conclusion and is not always the case. Britain had no choice but to accept the conditions set by the Americans as our economy had been destroyed. Therefore it was the Americans, through their ignorance of history, who destroyed the empire.
