जब घर वालों को पता चला कि एलिजाबेथ की दोस्ती फिलिप से बढ़ रही है, तो उन्हें बिलकुल भी अच्छा नहीं लगा. फिलिप के जर्मन नाते के चलते एक तरह से वो दुश्मन देश से जुड़ा हुआ था और ये परिवार को बिलकुल भी राज़ नहीं आया. बताया जाता है कि जब किसी जान पहचान वाले ने एलिजाबेथ के पिता से बातों बातों में दोनों के रिश्ते की बात छेड़ी, तो उन्होंने जवाब दिया कि फिलिप से कहो कि इस बारे में सोचना बंद कर दे. साथ ही उन्होंने ये भी इशारा किया कि बच्ची अभी बहुत छोटी है, अभी उसकी शादी की उम्र नहीं है. इसके अलावा पिता को फिलिप यूं भी पसंद नहीं थे. वो बस नाम के ही प्रिंस थे. उनके पास धन दौलत के नाम पर कुछ था ही नहीं.
