Seydlitz takes charge of 6th Army. Late November, Uranus begins, Soviets destroy Romanian 3rd army and cut off 6th German Army from the Don. Seydlitz, distrustful of the Luftwaffe's promises, wastes no time and breaks out of the pocket in early December. Heavy casualties during the hasty retreat, but the front is stabilized near Morozovsk. Seydlitz is court-martialed for disobedience and giving ground to the enemy, but in the officer corps of the Wehrmacht he is remembered as a hero.
