WNBC 66 New York - Howard Stern - July 4 1983 - Radio Aircheck
This aircheck is from Howard's first year at WNBC, and features Howard's popular feature, Stump The Comedian, with an early appearance from Jackie Martling. From July 4, 1983.
Back in the 1980s, when many radio stations playing music on AM were quickly dying, as music radio listeners had migrated to FM, New York’s 66 WNBC was one of the stations, which continued to play music and have decent ratings. The secret for WNBC was doing high personality radio, along with the music, on the adult leaning Top 40 station..
Some of the high personalty names on WNBC included Don Imus, Soupy Sales, Alan Colmes, Joey Reynolds, Bill Grundfest, Wolfman Jack, and of course Howard Stern.
Stern was on WNBC for only 3 years, but during that time, he created must listen radio for many New Yorkers on their drive home. Stern & his antics became very popular in afternoon drive, but throughout his three years at WNBC, Stern had many battles with WNBC management and other jocks at the station, specifically Don Imus and program director Kevin Metheny, whom Stern nicknamed "Pig Virus". Many of these conflicts were dramatized in Stern's autobiographical book and film Private Parts.
On September 30, 1985, Howard Stern was abruptly fired from WNBC, supposedly due to pressure from NBC corporate. After some time on the beach, Howard took over the afternoon show on 92.3 K-Rock WXRK, eventually moving to mornings, where he spent the next 19 years.

After over 40 years working on the radio, I have recorded lots of radio airchecks, and many from my friends as well.
You'll find audio of many radio personalities who have passed away. Lots radio recordings from the 1940s, through the 2010.
We also talk about radio broadcasting. If you happen to have classic airchecks, maybe even of yourself on the air, we'd love to share it here!
We also share videos about Travel & Cruising. I share tips on how I travel cheaply, so you can do it also! Find me on Facebook: / ellisairchecks

It's too bad that WNBC was shut down, I was listening to it during the days when Cousin Brucie moved there from WABC in '74,there are other stations online that are tributes to other once great stations long gone like WCFL,WIXY,KYA and probably others that I'm not aware of.

Fast forward to July 4, 2024: in just under 30 minutes, Howard once again captivated his loyal audience right here on KZread, as we all listened to this aircheck in its entirety, didn't we? 😂 I admired how Howard flawlessly read through the commercial copy and kept the show moving. By the way, his long-time sidekick Robin Quivers, now 71, was heard in this aircheck and sounds just as young and vibrant today! That's 66, Double U Nnnnnn BC! (phonetically speaking, of course). Thanks, Ellis!
