WNBA players Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi on new contract

U.S. women's basketball team players have negotiated a new WNBA contract to raise their salaries. WNBA and four-time Olympic gold medalists Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi join "CBS This Morning" to discuss how the new contract came about and why they want to keep players in the U.S., rather than going overseas to train.

The difference in pay from the US to overseas is not a small amount. Starting pay in the US is about 40,000 and in Russia, China, Europe, Turkey......it's $200,000. Sue and Diana were probably making $1,000.000 each season - also free room and board. The $100,000 is for training for the Olympics. Most WNBA players go overseas right after the season is over and the WNBA wants the elite players to stay around to train for the Olympics. So, once every 4 years they'll use this method to recruit and train the women's team.

The problem with the WNBA is that it's super boring when you compare it to the NBA or even NCAA mens ball...why would people watch something that is boring? I mean I like going bowling, but I am not going to sit and watch it. I definitely wouldn't go to a professional bowling event. I feel the same with the WNBA. It's slow, little to no dunking (and the rare dunks that do happen are pretty pedestrian), LOTS of airballs, etc. There are some dang good ballers in the WNBA, but they just aren't all that interesting to watch...it's just the way it is. I think the WNBA players should just be thankful that the NBA keeps dumping tens of millions of dollars each year just to keep them afloat and they get to play the game they love for a living.

Why do we like the NBA? The players are the top 1% of the best recruits from any year. The NBA players are predictably unpredictable which makes it exciting. A showcase of strength, skill, speed, aggression and power. All the things WNBA lacks. We've already seen what makes big money for women golf and tennis but people don't want to watch women's team sports, it's only 3rd at best like women's soccer. The NBA can keep writing checks, call it their advertising expense.

But the entire league loses millions a year. With their low pay, most teams lose money or barely break even. With this new contract, all teams will lose money. Why should the men have to pay for the womens league? If it cannot stand on its own, it is not a viable product. They lose 15 million a year while getting 10 million a year from the nba. So, the wnba actually loses 25 million a year. They cant give away tickets. Nobody cares about watching the equivalent of high school ball.
