WNBA draft exposes pay disparity between men and women players

The ratings for Monday's WNBA draft rivaled 2003’s NBA draft. But before possible endorsements, the base salary for every rookie in the WNBA is a fraction of 1% of the highest-paid NBA rookie.

You can't explain it like that, it's not going to make sense to people who don't already understand what you mean (I don't mean that as disrespect to them either, as I used be that way. You have to take a tad bit of effort to explain, like so): Salary is based on how much the league makes. If you get sellout crowds, everyone makes a good salary. So to point out some wage gap is just pointless. WNBA gets paid less, because they get less revenue, due to less fan interest. It's that simple. There is no, "it's unfair, we should more." Yes, I WISH you could get more, that would be great. But that's based on ticket sales. All that will probably change with this year's draft class. For the first time ever, the players feel important. @@kentuckylucky5762 Yes it may change but if they are banking on men to support it, not going to happen. Most men aren't interested in women's sports. That's just facts. The viewership they are screaming about is being manipulated by media. The final four was trending and it's college. I don't know one person that can name 5 WNBA players or name 5 teams. I never even seen a WNBA jersey before and never knew they had a draft. Plus the WNBA pushes LGBT and feminism. Good luck with that. Women need to band together, promote it and go to games. But women as a whole rather watch the Kardashians, the view and reality TV. There's no pay gap talk when it comes to Oprah, Scarlett Johanson and the Kardashians, all of them make more than most men in their line of work. They are in high demand like the NBA and bring in tons of money. The WNBA doesn't. Clark will get hers but the entire WNBA will not. I never watched a game and never will. Most males don't want to watch women's sports, we like masculinity. We like physicality, fights, dunks, etc. WNBA doesn't provide this. Clark may help a bit but turning the WNBA around will take at least a decade. Plus, the WNBA is heavy on the politics and social issues, it turns people off. I'm sure the abortion topic is pushed also. Male sports don't talk about that. Clark herself may talk politics and social issues and if she says the wrong thing the media will turn their backs on her. They will try to bait her in interviews for sure.

How is it a "disparity"? Look up how much revenue the NBA makes vs the WNBA. You cant pay players what you dont have and the NBA already subsidizes the WNBA. The NBA started in 1946 and the NBA Finals were in tape delay until Magic Johnson and Larry Bird saved the league and made it mainstream. Then a guy named Michael Jordan was right there to inherit that momentum to take the NBA to higher levels. The WNBA started in 1996 and simply has not had that transcendent player yet. Ive been watching basketball since the 80s and even watched the 1st WNBA game which was so bad I never watched another one, even when I was offered free tickets to a game. I watched Caitlin Clarks last 3 games and I will tune in to see how her rookie season goes. If she achieves similar success then the WNBA finally has their Larry Bird.

What it exposes is that people are paid in relationship to what revenue they can generate. There's another entertainment industry with women earning 2x more than men that illustrates this principle perfectly. The average female porn actress earns between $800 and $1,000 for a scene, while men in porn average $500-$600 per scene. Why? Because it's the female porn actresses that are bringing in the $$$...not the men! Does that make the porn industry an example of misandry or just simple reality.

The WNBA relies on $10m per year from the NBA to survive because they cannot even get people to attend the games. If maybe the WNBA could find a way to make their league entertaining maybe they could gather more fans. To get to the main point here is that the WNBA cannot afford their players better pay because they cannot draw a substantial crowd in their arenas.

You know exactly why. They love to prop up nonblack people in black dominated activities. We saw this with Eminem and Jeremy Lin also. Clark doesn't even have a title, but they will ride the wave to push feminism. She can play but she's most a manufactured product, with the full force of media behind her. She will be speaking about the pay gap and gender equality soon, if she wants to keep the media in her corner. She will then get backlash if she agrees with the gap or not.

When women started playing tennis professionally, they too were poorly paid. Even today, some women are paid less than their make counterparts, in the same tournament. The WTA is still striving to have these pay disparities corrected. It will take a long time for women to come close to being paid similar salaries as the men. They have to start selling out stadiums. People will want to see a female player who can excite fans with her play. Everything takes time.

IMO most professional sports athelets are way overpaid. Yes, they do get a percentage of revenue (of which WNBA players make a HUGE cut (since there is almost no revenue...)) but could they not set sane salary caps and use the extra $$ made by teams (after reaching caps) to help improve communities/cities/anything-of-worth and help fund research to keep AI from taking over the world? (kidding... kinda).

NBA players have a 50/50 deal with owners. They bring in billions per year of the owners are getting fat and the players are really chumped for their contribution. But everyone's happy in the NBA so no problem.
