WMAL-WJLA Behind the Scenes B-Roll 1978

Here's some behind the scenes footage of WMAL and WJLA in 1978. At WMAL-AM, we see midday man Tom Gauger at work. While on the air, he gets a phone call from AFTRA, could it be Evelyn on the line? Next is the noon news at WJLA with Chris Curle and Johnny Batchelder on set. I never liked that set, it looked like a ski lodge or a sauna, plus the fully carpeted anchor desk.

Chris Curle anchor for the Local ABC News (WJLA), where she was seen locally in greater Washington, while her husband Don Farmer was correspondent for the National ABC News, where he was seen across the country. They were recruited by Ted Turner to be the 2nd anchor couple at the upstart CNN in 1980, alongside yet the first husband/wife team Dave Walker and Lois Hart. Both anchor couples were recognized on national television.

That companion style of radio with the low key midday personality is a lost art. Those MOR stations stayed with you all day.
