WJLA-TV 7, Washington DC Sign-off from September 1986
This video recording of the District of Columbia's ABC affiliate station sign-off was submitted by John Pinckney of Pasadena CA. It's of the standard variety, utilizing a static station ID graphic with voice-over announcement, delivered by the late Fred Weiss. The station ID slide features WJLA-TV's unique variation of the famous ABC-TV "Circle 7"; logo, which was used by the station from 1970 to 2001, when it adopted the standard ABC "Circle 7" design used today.

When they signed on back then, they had a little DC oriented video sung by someone like Jeffery Osborne called "We're 7 and we're on your side!"

They still have the slogan "on your side"
I grew up with channel 7, and fell in love with the 'Circle 7' logo.
love the metro station background & the dc shots
I haven't seen that logo in ages.
Been waiting for something from WJLA-TV, the former WMAL-TV, when Allbritton bought the station from the Washington Star newspaper in 1977. Even during their last years as WMAL-TV they had that version of the circle 7, which was copied by Australia's seven network in the 80's.

Wait WMAL was a tv station? I thought they were just 105.9
Now owned by Sinclair Broadcasting, I'm surprised they didn't change the call letters to WSBG yet.

WNBC-TV in New York used the same film of the "National Anthem" in their sign-offs during the 1980's.
Technically, the WMAL logo from 1970-73 was the "four sevens around a star" logo. And yes, late staff announcer Fred Weiss also did the weather at one time. It was not until 1976 (when WMAL became WJLA) that Seven had the "Circle 7" motif until 2001.

False, AJ Brunot. On April Fools Day 1977 WMAL-TV became WJLA-TV ABC 7 for Mr. Allbritton.

Close. I missed it by only one year.
@caa1000 - Actually, this "U.S. Army Band/Mount Vernon SSB" (which dated to the mid-1960's, at the very least) was used in many places - among them WNBC-TV 4 New York; WNAC/WNEV-TV 7 Boston; WBZ-TV 4 Boston; WFMJ-TV 21 Youngstown, OH; KLCS-TV 58 Los Angeles; KRON-TV 4 San Francisco; and KHQ-TV 6 Spokane, WA. The recording dated to 1963 and was the ending track on "The United States Army Band" LP on RCA Victor LPM/LSP-2685.

WYTV 33 Youngstown, Ohio also used "U.S. Army Band/Mount Vernon SSB" film in the mid 1980s when WYTV had the mid 80s circle 33 logo.
Didn't he also did weather for Channel 7 during the noon news back in the '70's.
@NEPatriot - In 1963, four branches of the U.S. military put out albums in connection with the opening of the Kennedy Center (originally the National Cultural Center). Three of these albums (by the Navy Band, Air Force Band and Marine Band) have been reissued on CD. The Army Band record, however, was not, and thus is the only one of those four LP's that is currently OOP.
The logo looks familiar. It was the @7news Australia logo in the 90s.
That is ABC 7 in our nation's capital of Washington, DC from 1986. #sorrytrump
@wmbrown6 I assume that album is out of publication.
Hi there, I would like to use this in a documentary that I completed for school. How would I be able to obtain permission and credit properly to display this elsewhere? Thanks. Antonio Hernandez,
Amazing that ABC never had an owned-and-operated (O&O) station in D.C.

Very true. When the then-WMAL-TV went on the air in 1947, it was owned by the long gone Washington Star newspaper. The American Broadcasting Company (ABC) began operations in 1948, so it was assigned to Channel 7. Another fact of interest: WMAL took its callsign from its longtime radio station (the callsign was a tribute to M.A. Leese, a Washington optician who began the radio station in 1925.) Also, Seven was the first station to have a channel number higher than six to go on the air.
