So few things 1) your minimap is how your party sees the environment. If you get teleported you minimap will be messed up until you cast DUMAPIC 2) Cast DUMAPIC often, it shows your current position and records what you have explored in a level and fixes you automap with that info 3) the +1 hp on level up isn't bad luck. On levelup the game rerolls your entire HP if new total is greater you get that else +1 HP

I played this on the NES when I was like 10. I memorized the maze, even the dark level where you can only feel your way around by bumping into the walls to get to the elevator. Kids were just made different back then, I guess. Maybe less distractions. Anyway, it's one of the best games ever made if you like games that aren't there to placate you and you like figuring things out.

Wizardry was reportedly the game which inspired the whole JRPG genre long ago. You can see the connections. Apparently the title had a lot longer legs in Japan over the years too. I'm happy to see these old RPGs get a fresh coat of paint. However, I wish we could get remasters of the versions from the prime days of the series. Such as Wizardry 5 through 7. At least 6 & 7 anyway. I don't think Wizardry hit it's classic gameplay potential until those.

This remake is great! I’m playing it on Switch, and it run/plays fantastic. I’ve never been able to get into the early Wizardry games because the grid graphics of the map were just too cryptic to understand for me, but just being able to see down the halls makes this classic 100 times more playable today. It seems like you’ll still want graph paper because the map isn’t permanent, and resets when you change floors. I got my first party decently leveled now I’m working on a second party. Edit: oh yeah I like how you can view the original screen at any time, that’s a super nice touch they really didn’t have to include but it’s great they did for comparison. I like looking at the old monsters, and unique tiles

I grew up with these CRPGs; first one for me was The Bard's Tale when I was in grade school and I sunk countless hours before finally finishing it! I get your point about the lore, but to me it was always about your imagination. The primitive graphics and sparse story details gave you just enough info, and your imagination filled in the rest and for me that was always the charm of those earlier games.

Hmmm.. since the remake supposedly uses the original source, I wonder if the 'identify 9' bug (oops I mean 'undocumented feature*') can still be used to great advantage. In the original you only had 8 inventory slots. And when a Bishop class did an identify if they pressed '9' instead of giving an error or just ignoring the keystroke it would instead 'identify' the bishop's experience and give OOODLES of XP. * When I brought up this bug with Robert , he said "It is not a bug, it is an 'undocumented feature. I really enjoyed my time at Sirtech. For a young computer nerd like me it was truly a dream come true at the time.

I'm a big fan of earlier versions of the game, so I'll probably enjoy this. Old-school gameplay and brutal difficulty are things I enjoy in RPGs, maybe this will be something that will have a niche appeal because of this but that audience will likely be satisfied with the gameplay and presentation. I'll have to check this one out when I have the time, it's too bad I couldn't review it due to the release date being at a bad time for me personally where I had other obligations.

Wizardy is beyond brutal. I haven't checked all the features of this new one that probably has wimp mode built in but the real deal was NO saving... or rather, constant saving... your party would get killed and stay where they lied. You could go retrieve their bodies (and equipment) IF you had an empty spot in your party for them. So, you know, your level 15 party went deep into the dungeon and got killed in a rough spot. If you want them back you'll need a smaller party (so you have open spots) that's strong enough to survive the trip down there. Go create one from level 1 if you want your old guys back. You can revive them for a SHITLOAD of gold you don't have, and like a 5% chance of the revival actually working and if it doesn't, your party member turns to ash and is simply gone. Make a new party if you want to continue. You can loot the corpses of your previous party members for equipment, if you can get to them. Oh, and you'd better memorize all the spells because you'll be typing them in every time. Chests will explode on you if you can't randomly guess what type of trap is in it AND have a thief that's actually good enough to disarm it. You'll be dying a lot. Do not get attached to your characters. You're basically the manager of a team that's going to fail again and again.. you can keep the gold and equipment and stuff but the actual guys are really really doomed. Maybe think of it as Groundhog Day or maybe better as that Tom Cruise time loop movie... you can do it again and again until you figure out what to do and also get lucky enough to do it. Say hi to Murphy's Ghost, because you'll be seeing him a lot every time you take a fresh level 1 guy down into the depths. I think I'd be happy with chooseable spells, and even an auto-map (that one is very arguable because you should be making your own map for these games.. it's just the way it's meant to be played)... some better inventory systems just so I can see what's going on better, but actually I wouldn't want them to touch the difficulty at all, even though it's really really unfair. This is a proving ground, not a "game". You're really only proving your dedication to finishing a really old game nobody will care about when you tell them about what you've done, but if you can do it, you'll feel proud.

  • @PaganPilot

Wizardry series has always been a meat grinder. There is more Wizardry Llylgamyn saga "lore" actually in the older game instruction manuals, NES game manual/artbook and Japanese Wizardry Ttrpg. Wizardry "canon" is at best disjointed and/or speculative, until you reach Dark Savant Trilogy.

You can create drama, immersion, and tension in this game by doing exactly what it advises you not to do ... get attached to your characters; custom made ones, of course, whom you've named and spec'ed, and find yourself fighting to fund their possible resurrection. I created my party based on my first D&D campaign, naming them after my PC and my friends' PCs too. This ill advised approach more than makes up for the minimal story elements.

@@anonamatron correct, but for those who can't help but desire that element of rpgs, mostly because they are more into jrpgs than drpgs, that's how they can trigger those mental responses. Played the full series 1,2,3,5,6,7,8 The return of Werdna was a stand alone 4th game. I was really hard to get a hold of at that time. Each game was difficult, and you would spend 100's of hours on each game some would take 6 to 8 month to finish. Games these days are over in less than a week or they are shooters. You had to work up your characters and learn patters and good strategy if you wanted to survive. You don't see that in games today. Plus some games have terrible stories and plots. I sure hope they do the same for part 2,3, and 5. 6-8 are good as is. Not sure how many will like the 4th one The Return of Werdna, it is not party driven. This reminds me of why I didn't finish my College degree till I was much older. Games didn't have good graphics, but the playability and fantasy roll play was epic.
