Also, Caeser didn’t want Maximus to become emperor and rule after him, something most people seem to get confused. He wanted to pass the powers onto Maximus, so that Maximus could return Rome to a republic like it was before the rule of the Caesar ie the Roman Empire. Marcus wanted to break that tradition of dictatorship with himself and see tome returned to the people

Meanwhile, in real life - While Marcus Aurelius was a real emperor, and did have a son named Commodus that succeeded him, there was no such effort to restore Rome to being a republic. It's the most egregious ahistorical thing about this film. Rome did not become more democratic - it got LESS democratic and more autocratic as time went on.

This made Hollywood tons at the box office and well, considering all the movies this year so far that have been failures - this era of movies when there were great movies like this being made seems like an eternity away now. As far as I know, the only ending that was rewritten was that of Proximo the gladiator trainer. Oliver Reed - the actor that played Proximo - died before filming wrapped. The director didn’t want to reshoot everything with a new actor, so they redid Proximo’s plot ending with a body double and some CGI. Rome - the show didn’t last long on HBO, but there are a handful of people in that show that ended up on Game of Thrones.

The movie isn't historically accurate but a classic. A big inspiration for maximus is Cincinatus. He was given the powers of dictator (the meaning was different back then but he basically had sole rule of the republic) and then once the threat was over he gave his powers back he went back to being a simple farmer. That's why we have Cincinnati as a city today. Also the actor who plays Geoffrey in game of thrones used commodus as a big inspiration for his character

The correct term to use, to describe what was going down at the moment, is "Mano a Mano," which means "Hand to Hand" in English. So, when people are fighting each other individually at close range, you would say that they are fighting "Mano a Mano."

Still happens today but not to the same degree as thousands of men colliding with each other in bloody explosion. This isn't based on a true story. But the bad guy, Commodus was a real emperor (he's why toilets are sometimes called Commodes.) He was one of those fucked up dictators who named everything after himself. However, he WAS actually a pretty bad ass fighter and did regularly compete in gladiator games that he put on himself when he was emperor. He got couped, I think by an alliance of senators and the Praetorian guard (the purple cloaked soldier guys in the movie who tried to execute Maximus, the "best" Roman legion who guarded the capital; although, at this point they were sort of a bunch of decadent show offs, more politicians than soldiers.) I could be wrong about that last part though.

Hi! I would highly say REWATCH AEGON TARGARYEN’s crowning scene in episode 9 of House of the Dragon. See if you see the similarities with Gladiator and Joaquin’s performance. Tom, who plays Aegon has really brought a lot of Commodus in Aegon. Brilliant film, one best epics out of Hollywood. One of my favs of all time. This was before all those other Rome shows, due to the popularity of Gladiator. ROME is amazing. WATCH!

That kid actually killed Maximus by blurting something like that to his uncle. Maximus could have escaped and come back with an army. But it wouldn't be as dramatic I suppose.

How are you making a comparison to face-to-face combat? to bullets, with bullets you get shot and it’s over, face-to-face combat it’s a gruesome death it’s a tougher battle.

For Context, Gaul, Hispania and modern day Briton was colonized by Rome as part of thier expansion of the empire. They were eventually given up because of cost and the Roman army was too far from Rome. Rome still alive and kickin! 🇮🇹

Rome was nothing without its provinces. Rome WAS the provinces. And that tricoloured flag of yours would have been nonsense and of no meaning whatsoever to any citizen of the empire. So stop your ridicule
