With no Walmart, Texas town has no grocery store

Walmart has closed 154 stores in 27 states, resulting in over 10,000 employee layoffs. Many of the stores that closed were the only source of groceries in the areas they served. David Begnaud is in Whitewright, Texas, where residents now have to drive 22 miles for groceries.

Why when you can go to a larger store with cheaper prices and much better selection? Look at that ugly, filthy grocery store that guy was running. Obviously he wasn't putting any profits back into the business to make it more appealing.

First, he shouldn't have kept his business for 9 months after the -mart came in. It's not like he never heard of what was going to happen when the -mart came in to other cities and towns. He could have closed his store even before the -mart came in and save some money for other ventures. Second, now the -mart went out the town he has a great business opportunity but he doesn't see that way. If he had saved some money as I said above, he could have reopened it right away before anybody else comes in for total monopoly in town. Giving up the opportunity to somebody else, without fighting.

Foreign as in: strange, not from here. Walmart was founded by Sam Walton, this I already knew. However, it was a juggernaut that killed small businesses across the US. If you go to other countries, there are literally millions of different stores that towns would have, and Walmart is not known. I lived in Mexico, where Walmart has a presence, but the main competition is the small stores and individual families that outprice Walmart because of the availability of farmers willing to work with small distributors and small business owners. Here, farmers, producers, and factories all have exclusive contracts to large corporations with big money to keep them exclusive, so that small business owners would have to go through big corporations to get those same things at a much higher price because of that. That is where the manufacturer retail price comes in, it is the minimum price that small business owners can sell those products and make a marginal profit. Big box stores like Walmart sells below that price because of the exclusive contracts that they bought to buy the manufacturer's product at a much lower price. Because of that huge discount, Walmart makes a bigger profit even if they sell it at 20% less than the small businesses do. This is why when people want to buy things, food or economical clothing, they go to Walmart. This is how America works. The best capitalist wins and the small business owner loses. This happened because government officials and politicians have been paid off to quietly pass laws that allow corporations to monopolize and gain unfair advantage over distribution rights. Why this is so foreign is because it is becoming like a communist country where we solely depend on Walmart for everything: food, clothing, household items, electronics, furniture, gas, jewelry, automotive, etc. Tell me all the stores you go to for anything, most people say that they only go to Walmart, and not because it is the cheapest, but it is because it is the only store available, and I am not talking about cities, I am talking about small towns like this, all across America. Once a Walmart appears, everyone stops going to the stores they use to go to. America is turning into a third world country because of corporations like this: all money going to corporate heads, and stores filled with underpaid employees. America is going into the trash because of it, and the idiot rich think that having all the money makes them richer, when in fact it makes the money worth less because people have less access to use it.

I don't know if this is true, so it'll require vetting. Many years ago, I heard that one of WalMart's strategies was to open a bunch of little stores in communities, forcing the closure of those communities stores. Then , they open a megacenter in the center of that cluster. With the megacenter built, they shut down the smaller WalMart stores and force everyone to shop at the megacenter. Again, take that with a grain of salt.

Don't defend soulless corporations. " The evil is not in Wal-Mart's beginning, but in where it inevitably led. One of the effects of a Wal-Mart on a town is that it will entirely seize all the goods and services of the business community without any particular dependence on the economy of the area. If that sounds like mere survival of the fittest, look at it this way: As Walmart Store #555 becomes the largest (and in some products, only) store in Dublin, New Hampshire, then Dublin depends entirely on Walmart... while Walmart continues to think of Dublin as merely Store #555. Should they ever make the decision to close the store (as they have in Nowata, Oklahoma; Hearne, Texas; or Grand Saline, Texas), then Dublin takes it in the shorts. The effect is not unlike a giant resting on a comfortable chair that breaks under the strain; the giant gets up and walks on to another place to sit; the chair's options are markedly less."

When a big company expects a minimum ROI of $5 per $1 spent for operating a store. Yet the store only earns $4 in profit. The corporate bean counters would identify all of the underperforming stores to shutdown. It doesn’t even matter if it was a newly built store. They’ll rather eat their loses now than let it drag on and hurt their balance sheet.

Yeah, shame of people for going to a store with lower prices and far more selection. Why on earth would they do that just to save a lot of money, and to be able to buy what they want? It makes no sense. And reasonable person would much rather go to a more expensive sore with far less products he wants. It's not like any of these people are poor. They all make so much money they could just throw it away at a mom and pop store.

Walmart has done this across rural America. Mainstreet used to have all kinds of stores, everything from hardware, clothing, shoes, and drugstores, then Walmart moves in and undercuts them until they close. This pattern destroys not only mom and pop stores, but entire small towns.

Walmart hasn't done anything. People still had a choice. They went with the cheapest solution. They stopped shopping at the local store and shopped at Walmart because it was cheaper. That caused the local stores to have to close. How the heck is that Walmart's fault. You want to blame someone? Blame the idiot politicians who keep raising the minimum wage. That nonsense is putting a string on ALL small business. The only companies that can afford to pay unskilled workers $15/hour are the big corporate conglomerates. Walmart didn't cause anything... Idiot politicians (almost always democrats) and the morons who vote for them are the ones to blame.

Actually, people in food deserts (places where groceries are few and far between), ironically, tend toward higher BMIs. Why? Because they lack access to healthier fresh food at affordable prices. Thus, they must make due with processed food high in calories. I should know. When I moved from a small town where I could get to the distant grocery only once a month to a larger town with three groceries in it (including a Walmart), I lost 55 pounds. Being overweight has little to do with overeating and a lot more to do with over-processed (but highly affordable) foods and the ridiculous prices of fresh fruits and veggies in some areas. You know how much a bag of 6-8 decent-sized apples is, even in my "larger" town? Over $5. A little pot of cherry tomatoes? $3.50. I could go on and on. Eating healthy food is VERY much a luxury of the rich and those who live in larger cities.

When walmart stores dont hit fiscal sales projections. They close them. If the money is not there then no profit. Another reason the costs to maintain the store can outweigh the need to be there. Walmart right now is actually hurting from e-commerce. Its main competitor is Amazon. Its killing them. Walmart is having a hard time competing with them. Main reason they are laying off employees. Closing stores and sams clubs. Buying companies overseas for e-commerce to beat amazon and closing stores outside the walmart name in the UK and Brazil. Its just the beginning.

One nice thing about the internet is that you can shop for groceries from hundreds of different stores, and get free shipping over a certain amount of purchase. Online shopping can be more expensive than your local store, but if you don't have a local store, then online ordering makes sense. Canned goods, dried goods, soaps, and paper products can go a long way to helping cut down on long trips to a grocery store. Sometimes, local produce stands can fill in for fresh products as well. It pays to research your own area, as there are things you may not know about.

The guy said it right. The people close down the local store because they decided to go somewhere else. Is also good that he is not re-opening so people can understand this guy's struggle.

This is capitalism and Big Business at work. Big Business cuts its losses and shifts its assets in order to make the most profit for its shareholders. Clearly the Wal-Marts in some of these rural communities were not making enough profit. Big Business is not about social welfare or the what is best for the average citizen. People who live in rural areas can choose to travel far to shop once a month in a more populated area that has more amenities or they can re-locate to an area with more amenities or they can start ordering their necessities from Amazon or other internet businesses for home delivery. There was a time when rural America ordered a lot of its consumer goods from Sears Roebuck catalogs and from Montgomery Ward catalogs and used something called rural free delivery to get those goods delivered. As times change, consumers have to make adjustments and some of those adjustments are painful.

Wallmart comming in, selling at lower prises and putting local out of bussiness. Because nobody will shop and support the only local. Then wallmart leaves in under one year. Well... Of course he will not reopen. I fully understand him. Why would he offer service to those thqt put him out of bussiness? This whole thing reminds me of Pinocchio. He was warned not to go to the land alongside all the other children... Finally, when they did not listen, they turned into donkeys. Yeah.... Suck it and own it.

When a town has only 1700 residents, how much money can Walmart make? it seems like it would be a financial burden. Small towns like that need mom and pop stores and independent supermarkets. It's such a big corporation and they don't care about closing this store and they don't care about residents having to drive over 20 miles out. It sucks but they only care about generating funds.
