Witchcraft Suppression Act 1957 | Verwoerd | Catholic Church | Saints | Khotso | C Mutwa | uKutwala

Abba, Lebo and Tewodros discuss the Witchcraft Suppression Act of 1957 and the effect it had on African Spiritual beliefs, customs and rituals. This conversation brings to light a few individuals, whose legacy is shrouded in myth and legend.Furthermore, what is the link between Christianity and some rituals practiced by iZagoma?

The point made at 26:32 is sooooo true. I'm a varsity student and inevitably ngifunda namarich kids and they are sooo incredibly whitewashed it's actually shocking. But the ironic part is that they claim to be politically woke and aware, yet they are undeniably and evidently white washed. Baffles me everytime.

Yazi I am glad that you touch on Christianity and witchcraft. Last year i had a light bulb moment when i was sitting and thinking yazi in actual fact the God of the bible can curse people easily and yet we practice it as though those curses are not there. NgesiZulu kuthiwa umlomo uyadala. I know my parents bakhuza if usho into embi but if you say positive abasho lutho. Christianity pushes people to say things over and over in that way creating the world that is in someone else's desire. Kuyaculwa which is calling things into existence. Kuyathandazwa also speaking into existence. And the preacher still speak things into existence. Now about what the bible promises as the new earth is nothing but wishes for white people. For example - How can the new earth have no sun. Yibona kuphela abahlushwa ilanga. How did that become everyone s desire to live in. The new earth has no sea also. The new earth has streets of gold. Well even if gold is high value they made everyone to love it. Mina nje to me that bible is nothing but a book of manifestation for them not Africans. You can see their churches are almost dead, but go to an African church kuculwa phezulu, kuthandazwa kakhulu, abefundisi nabo ba in fire but see which nations are gaining power over and over. This world is clearly run by witches.

Great conversation, I just have a few questions regarding some of the points made. 1. Is there a reason why healers shouldn't be doing consultations online? I live in China and I've had a few sessions with a healer online. But from what i gathered from Ntate Lebo, I don't know if frequencies emitted from technological devices affect the healing? Can someone explain please. 2. Tied to the first question, are African ways/practices not meant to evolve (not commercialize as Abba was saying) but evolve in accommodating the lifestyle of current Africans? 3. What are Abba's thoughts on the current surge of sangomas and/or gifted people? Could it be attritubed to effects the Witchcraft Suppression Act had on African spiritual practices that are now "liberated" and given self expression due to the time we live in? And last, this is just a comment. When Abba asked if the Act still had remnants today, it made me think of how in previously white suburbs Africans living in those communities aren't even allowed to slaughter as it will be reported as animal cruelty and our practices are still confined to townships and rural areas. Give thanks 👏🏾 Much love ❤

Greetings queen. I would like to attempt to answer you if you don't mind. Abba can also come in and pull the ship from the extents of our knowledge. Firstly I must say it sure must be nice to be wise. You asked questions to which you already know the answer. Your second question answers your first. I am part of the Traditional Healers Organisation (THO) and your question creates for conversations come up quite often during our gatherings. The majority of the members of the organisation are the older generation so they have a lot of things they frown upon that the younger generation of gifted people do. But in the past 10 years or so the new membership of traditional healers has continued to get younger and younger that it begs for such conversations to be had, even if uncomfortable. Yes, Ntate Lebo's first point is spot-on. It looks weird when people go to get initiated for 3 months then come back as early as they are done and sebayabhula on social media, especially when you know all the processes that had to be done in times before to build a well-rounded sangoma. Yes, maybe things can be achieved quickly now because of the ease of doing certain things that has been provided by technological advancements. At least I hope this is the only case. But what I have personally observed is that the fault is with the already practicing gifted people that must help the 'newly-discovered' gifted people with their rights of passage. I do not know if healers are doing this deliberately or they really cannot pick it up emsamo, but it seems that many people are not being told that it is not everyone that has a gift that must get initiated into being a sangoma. Spirit has different needs, hence we have always had different types of initiations in the continent. Some people must get initiated because they have to break a generational curse in their bloodline. These are the people that usually get initiated and are then able to come back and get back to their old routines. The rights of passage that they have to be helped with usually do not require them to get initiated for a long time. Unfortunately because of the misinformation that exists (still not sure if its deliberate or not) some of these newly initiated people then want to come back and build imisamo with the hope of healing issues outside of those in their bloodline. When they do not see outsiders flocking into izindumba zabo or they do not see themselves developing some of the abilities that a sangoma usually needs when they are sent to heal issues that exist outside of their own bloodline, they are told "amadlozi wabo avaliwe". This then creates unnecessary pain for the initiate, because it is usually not true, because the truth is according to their ancestors they have achieved that which they had to do for the bloodline. Unfortunately in most cases these initiates end up going from one gobela to the next baze bagcine bathwala. And then there's the gifted people that come from the lineage that has always produced healers in every generation since time immemorial. 99.99% of the time these ones have to also heal and their initiation usually takes a long time to "ripen", because of the many layers that must be peeled back and all the other stages of growth that must be reached even post the ephehlweni so that they end up being well-rounded healers. And yes, there are many other reasons a bloodline would require someone to get initiated. I just mentioned the 2 most commonly observed. So I have mentioned all of this to attempt to answer you this way ausi Lerato; that the older generation normally forgets that if Lerato's ancestors choose Lerato to continue with their works it is because they believe Lerato can continue to help them uphold the covenant they made with uMvalinqangi early in the evolution of mankind and the subsequent beginning of their lineage in a relevant-to-the-current-times-manner. Yes, Lerato is supposed to make the healing make sense to the times she is living in so that she will also have something to pass on to the next generation when the time comes, because if Lerato does not help the healing innovate it might get stuck in times past and potentially cease to exist, leaving that bloodline with generational misery. But of course innovation must always be done carefully and with respect for the foundation from whence it came. The answer to question 3 is yes. It surely is a good time to find out that you are gifted🙂

@@ndumakazulu Wow, thank you so much for that in depth response. You opened my eyes to things I previously didn't know about the different gifts we have and how each gift has its intended purpose. I appreciate the time and dedication in your post. Thank you 👏

@@LeratoFigland You are welcome ntokazi. I really think in the most purest of intentions we are all saying or trying to unlock the same thing. And I think this is because spirit is just spirit. It likely has no racial identification or gender specification. I think when we then give spirituality its physical experience (which it definitely needs from all of us) we then choose based on our preference how we want to geographically interpret our spirituality. So it is okay for me to want to give my spirit an African experience as long as I understand that there is nothing different with what I am trying to achieve with what an Indian is trying to achieve with his Kundalini Yoga or what a Chinese is trying to achieve with Taoism. it is actually best to even be influenced by everybody. I can also learn a lot from the very early European that practiced his Christian belief system before it got politicised. I think our ego and us wanting to expand our territories made us believe that we are saying different things. Please allow me to get preachy a little bit. So as much as I think it is okay for each person to believe in whatever they choose to believe in, I think it is also necessary that we continue to make the ascension up the 3 stages of religion/spirituality. This will help us avoid getting stuck in this more literal interpretation of our beliefs. In as much as the Myths and the Rituals are important in all beliefs, these early stages of development of the believer are more culturally influenced and our different interpretations of what culture must continue to look like through the changing times have been dividing us for many centuries. I think it is healthy for us to continue striving to get to the highest stage of inkholelo, which is the Mysticism stage, because here we are confronted by the reality that actually everything is just one thing. Stay blessed ntokazi and never stop asking questions🙂

Can we, as Africans differentiate malevolent witchcraft from spirituality in that people are spirits having a human experience whereas malevolent witchcraft is the exploitation of the spiritual art with the intention of harming the community? Therein should lie the difference between the healer and the witches. One works for the community and the other works against the community.
