Witchcraft: Going Over the Hedge

Going over the Hedge, the Fence, or some other metaphorical structure, is often a concept we find in discussions of WitchCraft (Traditional Folk Beliefs); the idea of stepping over boundaries, transgressing or transcending the limitations of the mudane world and step into the wilderness for the sake of the Craft and to commune with the Others. But what does this mean in terms of the transformation of our own perception in order to establish an animistic world-view? This is what I'm going to try to discuss in this video. I hope you find it useful.

A difficult concept explained well. I'm very grateful for your erudite descriptions. Long ago in my late teens and twenties I began a journey to "discover my feral self". As someone I was reading put it, to remember my creaturehood. In the process of doing this I discovered the immense amount of conditioning we are all subject to that leads to the idea that humans are separate from the rest of the fabric of life which I was never able to accept. I was fortunate to have had relatively open parents, teachers and peers that accepted my "nature-boy" ideas as long as I kept a job and acted normal. I'm 72 this weekend and I've grown to react to most people the way squirrels, birds and deer do...I want to run like hell!

where one thing goes one way, another goes the opposite, while yes you are right there are also now more witches shamans and other kinds of spiritualist then ever in the world history (of modern man). its really something to be happy about and while i have no idea where this life may lead us i trust there is no reason to fear death on the path we walk, for more reason then just earthly.

@Dennis Plum pretty strange how under a spiritualist video, youd conveniently ignore the context and history which brings people to their actions ? There are so many global reasons why people would begin to gatekeep culture, dont speak as if thats not part of an energetic cycle in of itself . Sadly, people were put in positions where culture needed to be defended and owned . Now, people want to preserve and reclaim said cultures . Its more a shame that those people cant be understood by some than it is that they exist in their predicament . Not everything is "yours"

Rae Beth's first book, Hedge Witch (mentioned at the start of the video) is a book about Wicca, not Hedge Witchcraft. In subsequent books, however, she delves deeper into the practice of riding the hedge, crossing boundaries, working with the Fair Folk, etc. There have been a few books since Rae Beth's works that focus on the trance and animistic practices involved in Hedge Witchcraft, including my own which just came out for Kindle in October and the paperback coming out 8 November. Hedge Witchcraft is about working with the Otherworld and this world, to better understand and to inform us of different perceptions from those allies that we work with when we are crossing the hedge. Through various trance practices, we can connect to the Otherworld in order to gleam information and inspiration to take back with us to "mundane" reality :)

I live in Canada, and feel lighter as the video goes along. Straddling cultures is exhausting, and lacking a sense of place is alienating. As a child, I felt profoundly connected to tides, plants, earth and sky. No words. This place holds beautiful, compelling landscapes. Hard to describe how immense at times. I did not feel like I was allowed to love it, though. Not possession, but as a being in such a place as this. I can relate to abandonment of labels by tuning into those early sensations of love and natural absorption, of this bigness and embracing nature. I stood on a beach in Scotland as an adult, and felt like I was seeing it through eyes from the past. I loved it too, tide and sky. A label broke off then too, and floated away. Love returns slowly, wave by wave. Thank you.

I have been watching your videos for a while and I find them really interesting and important to understand for a better comprehension of our world and the way we relate to all entities. As a childhood sexual abuse "survivor" watching some of your videos regarding sexuality within spirituality really helped me understand a subject that is hard for me to process, even to the point of preferring asexuality in this hypersexual society of modern world. Thank you for all your time invested in studying and collecting all of this information that could lead us all to a better connection with the spiritual and material world, and also thank you for inspiring me with knowledge to maintain my vegetarian (almost vegan) way of life. I hope we can all try to get to this comprehension that you are so kindly sharing for a better well future and present. I hope you keep on investigating, developing your craft and sharing this valuable time of yours in a materialistic society hehe >:) greetings from Mexico and wish you all the best and good luck in your path and crafts :)

As a Hedge Rider, I am fluid in my "beliefs", animistic in my approach, and let the spirit world to help me build understanding of this 'other'. I wasn't raised religious both in my home culture but also my small communities culture. So, I am able to get out of the shackles of religious bondage. Entheogens are the spirit of flora opening the door, and then let my magical actions play their part in the web. Hedgewytchery that I was shown is very open and fluid, no rigidity or dogma... only understanding and walking the path, while engaging the world magically.

I have never read that book you mentioned or any others on hedge witchcraft for that matter. I simply use the label because most in the witchcraft community understand it means my practice is heavy on trance work and astral travel and “they” get upset when folks explain a witchcraft practice as “shamanic”. Thank you Arith for a very good video! In my personal experience, entities of the spirit world are often suspicious towards us humans - and for very good reasons. We are after all destroying their homes. This world, this universe, this very existence, is not about us human beings. The world wasn't created to tickle our egos - nor for our betterment or salvation. We are just one of the forces active into this world. And we are a force of destruction. The more contact I have with the sprit world, the more of my humanity I leave behind. This I see as a good thing. When we are crossing that border we aren't leaving the world. We are going inside the world. Hope any of what I just wrote made sense to at least someone... 🙂

I'm a real Hedgewitch. And have been practicing long before this book came out. It's basically folk magic, Witchcraft, and Shamanic practices all entwined around what is known as Ancient Magic and or Natural Magic. Transition is the key to all Hedgewitchery. We have jobs, we work for our wages, we don't have need to make a career of being a Hedgewitch. So that's some of what real Hedgewitchery is about. It's not being the Naturalist, but a Naturalist can be a Hedgewitch. And we don't rely too much in deities either. We work with the spirits of local lore, or even mythology whenever we Ride The Hedge, in order to have a manifestation to come about.

I had many self-imposed labels, especially between the ages of 15 and 25, and although I have had many experiences from which I've learned valuable knowledge that has made me who I am, the labels never really defined me as a person but rather forced me to be stuck and slowed down my personal evolution, which had several negative consequences. Still today it's hard to ditch labels and some identifications are quite useful to survive within human society, but life and the world isn't just living within human society. All humans have the instinct, the impulse, to seek out nature, and out there self-identifications are of little consequence. Nature humbles us. Be well my friend and thank you! Wish you the continuation of a wonderful week.

They just want to be content with everything being easily unpacked at the end of the day. An extremely dangerous and selfish mentality, it's not exclusive to Christianity either. Everyone will accept delusion for the sake of (at the very least) apathy. I can imagine a beautiful world where this isn't the case but people can't handle or don't want it, the shock would be too extreme. This is why they create such things, deep down they know they're liars unless the group is large enough. And I think it is possible to view the hedge between human existence and the spirit realm VS between our experiences and multiple realities and universes we have no knowledge of. You can gain knowledge of the first through reincarnation (if you believe in that), some forms of meditation, dream work, paranormal experiences, etc. Those are just as valid as any other “beliefs” we humans have.

All what you say has been my journey but the way I could actually have an easier access to cross that Hedge is by working with Amanita Muscaria as a way to shamanically journey and peel away these layers of programming, identity, ideology and all that, one by one, like an onion... Amanita Muscaria is free of any ideology or identity, it's use is very individual, there is no one size fits all and you have to establish your personal relationship with it over time, and only then you can tap into what I call magical synchronicity, higher wisdom, knowledge of the old...which we have lost access too.

This is so wonderful Arith. and like others here, i needed to hear this because I am alone with these feelings here. And i was thinking I'm gonna share this and tell people that they should listen to this, these ideas once a week. Wouldn't that be something. Every day I get up, and go again.Cheers

You are a few philosopher. It is true I changed so much through my quest to encounter spirits of Nature. The thing that really changed is my pride, I thought I deserved things because I was myself. But in the Other realm spirits defie you and put you on trial, they can be angry or fearful, they are rarely the good fairy. While you learn all that, you recall your wild side.

Person of the world. You have encapsulated something that has always been a part of my practice, and I rarely hear in witch craft discussions. The bird doesn’t care about what language you speak, what borders on a map it flies over, and the bird couldn’t care less about the color of our skin. Beyond the hedge, we are persons of the world. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video.

Thanks for the content!! It's the second video from your chanel I find by chance and in both you apologise for the long explanations. Please don't. I know nowadays some people prefer short and compact videos with easy content but I hope I'm not the only one who enjoys long thoroughly explained videos! Specially about this type of content. I'm enjoying every single word!

As I have lived, travelled and learned I reached the conclusion that we are able to see only what we do have already inside of ourselves. This is why real knowledge is so important. And yes, life is a gift. Thank you for your thoughts.

Your capacity to express this concepts as things we as the viewer can digest with benefit to us rather than any insinuation that you have a knowledge we don't is a wonderful, practical example of exactly what I think it is you are conveying (that the beginnings of witchcraft are about grasping that your being and needs and mind and will may differ drastically from any energy you attempt to connect with). That integrity makes the content very inviting, and I thank you for being in integrity with your message!

That's an overly quoted and vague quote. That being said, this video made me think of 'Freedom from the Known' by Jiddu Krishnamurti, my philosophy teacher was an ex Sufi and student of Krishnamurti for ten years, and he taught several philosophy courses but the only physical text he assigned (there was alot of reading and videos and online class shat sessions and meet ups) was 'Freedom from the Know', I took his courses for three semesters so I went over the book again and again, and the audio book on You Tube (the one that sounds good). I highly recommend it.

@@whatabouttheearth I can understand how it may be overly quoted and even vague in your own experience. But it was and has remained profound for me, repeatedly, for decades.Countless times. Obviously, a segment of this video most certainly made me think of it specifically. I'll find and add the audio book you recommend, as I am currently building a new playlist for my current work.

"What happens when a priestess of Isis channels an Orisha such as Oshun? Should she say "Sorry, you are not part of my tradition, go away!" or should she recognize that spirit and accept its validity? ...our experience, as well as that of others, is that this does occur (Farrar, Janet and Gavin Bone. Lifting the Veil: A Witches' guide to Trance-Prophesy, Drawing Down the Moon, and Ecstatic Ritual. p. xvii)." Immortals do not recognize the boundaries of mortals. Gods are not culture, but ineffable forces beyond our understanding or control.

Excellent video! I'm glad you addressed this. My practice really didn't get to where it needed to be until I had done what you are speaking about. My surgery shut me down for a while. I couldn't keep up with my practice and found myself focusing on relating to the animistic universe more and changing my mindset. Much needed video! Thank you!

when people speak in favor of universalism my horns always go up....as I see it.. all life creates borders, an inside and outside with a separation between... within the work of the cell is done... diverse beings, spirits do their work uniquely and in harmony.... without the work and without the harmony the cell dissolves and its elements find new associations and rebuild the borders and the cell...under different conditions both inside and out

Hello, from the USA, Earth. I wish to understand the unseen others and understand their intentions. Do they label themselves as well? Can we understand their dimension? How do they perceive the matter world? Do they cause harm or do they follow any concepts of 'cause no harm'? Can they be trusted or do they always follow their inherent, pre-determined impulses? Do they have unique personalities? Do they believe in a Creator (not a human-envisioned God) but a creative force that weaves throughout everything? Can we create avatars of thought that can visit and share thoughts with one another? I wish to understand...from within and without. :) Thank you for this video.

I agree. If one is not an authentic Hedgewitch then assigning themselves the title is like a fish claiming it is a land animal. Being. Hedge Witch means having such a strong and intimate relationship with self and those boundaries.

I found this video by accident, while doing research to better understand the Hedge Witch and who she is. I found several videos that gave definitions, practices to be carried out and that's it, as if nothing else was important besides me, as if jumping over the hedge was almost obvious and everyone behind me was just anxious to get to know me, to shake my hand or to teach me who knows what arcane secrets. The reality is that Others exist independently of me. Thank you for such an intense video, I think I will have to watch it again and again to better internalize the individual concepts. I hope there will be more, like this.

This is such a wonderful breath of fresh air. Just as your expectations, mannerisms, perceptions and actions change to communicate and interact with other worldly beings like our pets, children, differently abled people or a boss, we have to adjust ourselves to communicate/interact with otherworldly entities/forces/powers. Not one or the others care or understand your mundane problems, origins or status. So be who you are, do what comes naturally to you, and adapt. To work with otherworldly forces, WE have to change for and respect them, and not the other way around.
