WISH Review: Yeah, it's bad

Sorry for bad audio quality, but I got back from the Netherlands, house renovations are done, and I'm getting my new desk set up! Maybe next video I'll chat about my Netherlands trip.

The Short, "Once Upon A Studio"! Was so much better then the entire movie and a better celebration of Disney 100 years ago!

What's worse they is that they could've given the reason a wish doesn't get granted despite how innocent it is because it can snowball to chaos. Or that's what caused the Magnifico's home to be destroyed because an innocent wish went awol.

All this story don't start because he doesn't grant enough wishes... but because he didn't chose HER grandfather wish! That's the only reason this story started, because she was... egoist and thinking only about her family lol she literally pushed away everyone else wishes and only saw that one but when HE pushed it away she was just like "GASP! YOU EVIL!". She had the mindset of the villain from the start😂

I'm so annoyed that they changed Starboy to a literal star, cause "Oh no, what makes him different from Genie?", when you consider the fact that: Magical female characters in Disney: Fairy godmother from Cinderella, the 3 faries and Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, the one from Pinocchio, Madam Mim from The Sword in the Stone, The Evil Queen from Snow White, Mary Poppins, Ursula from The little Mermaid, the one from Beauty and the Beast. Was never a problem having 11! characters with the same abilities and gender throughout a span of 54 years (never mind 4! in the same movie!). Heck! , Asha even becomes another! fairy godmother figure without that! being an issue! But Starboy and Genie, the only other male, magical character I can think of, being similar when they were created 31 years apart from eachother, that's two too similar characters too many?! We were robbed.

Everything about this movie just… isn’t enough. Asha doesn’t have enough personality, the friends don’t have enough screen time to establish them, especially the happy one, magnificent didn’t have enough time to show a difference between him being his normal control freak nature vs his under control nature, the queen didn’t get enough of anything, I would’ve loved to see her start as a somewhat villainous character but only because she’s doing what she thinks is best for the kingdom, similar to magnifico, only to realize shit hit the fan once she realized he’s possessed, speaking of which, the forbidden magic didn’t get enough time to establish itself, none of the visuals had enough color or style, the songs don’t have enough to make them unique, they end up sounding like ai generated Lin Manuel songs, and none of the visuals of said songs have enough going on despite having interesting visual ideas like mirrors, stars, light, and magic surges. It’s just so disappointing. The epitome of it has to be magnificos villain song. I like that it’s strangely chipped to reinforce that he sees himself as the hero, but it doesn’t change enough at the end or do enough visuallyc lyrically, or vocally to show his descent into true evil. Wish is just… diss

Me on my way to watch every Wish critique I can find so that I can learn what mistakes to NOT make in my own storytelling:

What's weird is an apprentice would mean he doesn't demand no one ever learn magic, just go through the proper program, aka learn from him. Asha could have gained all of his powers for herself if she didn't blow the interview by demanding her grandfather's wish is granted.

It's a shame they scrapped the plot twist that revealed that Magnifico is a fallen star. That would've been so goated.

This felt less like a celebration of Disney's legacy and more like the peak of "this is what Disney is now". A boring monopoly that banks on bad nostalgia with the main forces leading every bad decision being big wig execs. This place feels like somewhere genuine creativity decays instead of thrives. If that's what Wish was going for (it's not but let me cope) it succeeded with flying colors.

GOD I WISH THEY KEPT THE BEADS IN HER HAIR. Imagine toward the end of the movie, it seems like Magnifico has won by killing Starboy. Asha floats in the twilight clouds, singing her song in defeat. All of her braids unravel, revealing her natural curly hair blooming like a nebula in the air. The beads that once held her braids descend to the Earth like colorful hail raining from the sky. A few tumble across rocks others settle into the grass, shimmering like tiny jewels. They reach him bouncing lightly off his face and body. His eyes flutter open, reflecting the colors of the beads awakening him back to life.

Now that I think about it, the ability to grant an 18 year old’s wish is terrifying. Like what about forcing someone to fall in love, killing someone, or reviving the dead? Say a family member dies a day before the ceremony. Can Magcifico revive them with zero consequences to himself or the deceased?

Another major problem I have is that Asha’s quest has no urgency to it. Literally everyone in the kingdom is shown to be overwhelmingly happy and energetic even without their wishes. An easy way to fix this would be to show everyone miserable or drain of all hope and light without their wishes, just going through their regular 9-5 jobs with little to no enthusiasm in life.

I really feel this movie was supposed to be an origin story for the evil queen and her magic mirror, hence why the queen was so ambivalent towards her husband being trapped within it; she got her wish, to be the sole ruler of the kingdom. Like, I can see her manipulating magnifico into doing all these evil deeds just so she can get what she wanted. This is why there's so many references to Snow White in particular, because this was supposed to explain whwre the evil queen came from and the source of her magic.

I strongly agree with you on the boring design of Rosas. Corona and other Disney towns that I’ve seen were much more colorful, vibrant, and overall visually appealing to look at; Rosas just looks like it was just grayed over with hardly any color or just muted colors. How Disney messed up this bad on background visuals still befuddles me (even though I think I know the reason by now).

I think you made me realize a new problem I have with the movie, the magic. Apparently, I have more whimsy in my left pinky toe than the entirety of this kingdom. The power to bend reality and the people use the one time taste to jumpstart a career!? We could do the impossible and the magic in this movie feels like it's working off a TV budget.
