The dispute over the Toledo Strip was with Ohio. The US government didn't want trouble and Michigan wanted statehood. The UP was basically a consolation prize for playing nice with Ohio. Wisconsin wasn't a state at the time so they didn't have much say in the matter.

Yup President Jackson at the time gave land to territory of Michigan so they could become a state otherwise war would've happened. And that's why UVM and OSU have 1 of the biggest rivalries to this day.

The greatest part about living in Michigan is having two states in one. The upper peninsula is so much different than the lower. But both are certainly Michigan! It was either Michigan or Ohio. And honestly when you look at the toilet bowl that is Trenton I think we got the better end of that deal.

Nothing about the UP screams michigan like it screams northern Wisconsin. No crime but all the laws due to the crime of the east side of the mitten is annoying. I went to college at U of M. A lot of resident students made their hands look like mittens and pointed out their hometowns. I've never met a Wisconsinite who pointed out his hometown on a mitten.

Welcome! Right before this short I watched a short by Lost In The Pond, and he explained that almost no one in the UK drinks egg nog around the holidays. That blew my mind, because the drink has English roots and it's insanely popular here around Christmas. If that is true, is there a different drink popular around the holidays in England?

Basically there's two parts to Michigan. The Lower Peninsula and the Better Half. The LP likes to drive north to visit the Better Half but keeps all of the funding downstate for themselves. Many people who live in the Upper Peninsula wish the UP was part of WI. I live 9mi from the state line and when you cross into WI, the roads are better and well maintained, with more passing lanes. They have less gravel roads, more pavement. Their parks have plumbing and other amenities, NONE in the UP have more than vault toilets. Until tourist season comes, the Lower Peninsula pretty much forgets the UP exists.

Wisconsin looks nothing like a mitten!

Interesting facts. 1. Michigan technically touches Minnesota in the middle of Superior. 2. Michigan has a THIRD peninsula. When the war was over, they drew a straight line across the two states on a Parallel. Well, there's a small part of land where the Ottowo river flows into Lake Erie that's above that Parallel so it's a part of Michigan. It's known as the Lost Peninsula.

Looking at Wisconsin right now trying to figure out how it could look more like a mitten than Michigan.

The other states didn't ever know this was a rivalry

A friend of mine at work we call him 2-pont-3, around 10 years ago was trying to drill through a 50 BMG. round to make a necklace and it went off. He lost his pinky, ring, middle finger to the second knuckle and part of his palm from his middle finger to his wrist on his left hand. So hes got this joke that he's better than you because hes got a full map on michigan. Left Hand looks like the U.P. the Right looks like the .L.P.
