Wiring Diagram Lighting Circuit 2 Plate Method Taking the Feed to the Switch - 1 Way Switch & Light

Student training aid for the connections required to wire a lighting circuit using the 2 plate method. Video explains the connection required within the 1 way switch, a consumer unit (fuse box) and lighting point (LED downlight) via this wiring diagram. The circuit is wired in twin and cpc cables (twin and earth cable) and is a wiring diagram for this circuit. This video will show learners how to connect up the one way light switch when the feed (supply) is taken directly to it and not first to the lighting point. This 2 plate method is often used in domestic dwellings where there is lots of LED spotlights to wire in one room and can also be called taking the supply to the switch.
How to wire up a light and a one way switch. This wiring diagram will help you understand the connection requires in a one way lighting circuit using the 2 plate method.

Well done Gaz - as you say a bit crowded and upside down! Good luck trying to draw that and also incorporate taking the feed to another switch feeding a different set of lights and just for fun why not add 2 way and intermediate :)

Hi Gaz. Another great video, so well explained. Just a quick question. If your downlights are double insulated, what do you do with the cpc in the twin and earth cable? Do you have to use a junction box and then some cable from there that is just live and neutral?

Hi I need a bit of advice I have done a EICR on a rented property with no RCD the land lords wont's to fit a Masterplug RCD plug adapter 2 pole rated at 13A 13A V ac for the time being. then he wont's me to fit 3 RCD sockets 2 in the garage and 1 in the kitchen where they use it for mowing the lawn. I have looked in the REGs but can not find anything that cover this do you know if this would be acceptable.May be this could be a topic you could cover. another well explained video.

I always remembered it by the light fitting. If you connect the line supply into the middle loop plate on the light fitting you have to use all of the 'plates' in the light fitting (L, LOOP, N). If you wire through the switch, you only connect onto the 2 end plates in the light fitting (L&N)...

how can the downlight at 7:50 have no earth when there are clearly metal parts on the exterior.

They are class 2 equipment also called double insulated so they don’t need a CPC (earth)

@@GSHElectrical might say on the cover but how is that possible with metal exterior parts? It's possible (although admittedly quite unlikely)for a loose live from the terminals to come in contact with those metal parts. Am I being too cautious? I don't trust labelling anymore.
