I loved all of your helpful info Ashley! I went down the rabbit hole online and was so frustrated with the crappy marketing of most brands. I was curious why they never actually shared with consumers how they sounded!! You helped me immensely and I am grateful for you :) I'm a newly graduating yoga teacher and I really needed to amplify my voice. have a great day!

I bought this product after watching your video. It worked really well the first few times and now the TX battery dies almost after one hour. The company hasn't written us back about the problem. Its not so nice anymore for teaching yoga because I can't give classes that are longer than an hour and a bit. I love your videos by the way. It's nothing personal. I just wish I saw a comment like this before buying it. Thank you.

If you think you might need two microphones, go for the Rode Wireless Go II. You can always use it with just 1 mic. But it's nice to have that back-up or the ability to have multiple people or additional sound options. I have both, and I still use the original primarily. But I wanted to shout out the II option.

Great video for explaining the crazy cord set up needed for the Rode microphone. Like you, my studio has been using this microphone since the end of March and recently ran into line of site issue now that I'm able to operate classes again in the studio. Since I'm continuing to offer live streaming of in studio classes I've had to move the computer and receiver farther away from the instructor (maybe 30ft opposed to 10ft). There's no longer a direct line of site from the transmitter to the receiver as my computer and receiver is not directly in front of the instructor but more at an angle. Audio is now cutting in and out and if the instructor turns to face away from the camera, audio is lost completely. Up until the point of having to move the receiver further away, the microphone worked perfectly. Wonderful for filming on demand content as well. Something to keep in mind if you're planning to continue to offer live stream content once your studio reopens. You will need a direct line of site to maintain a constant audio signal :)

Good info, Ashley! I've been using the same Rode Wireless Go for my outdoor boot camp classes. I'me still experimenting with the best way to use them for my Facebook Live streaming. I've clipped the mic to the bill of my visor and I've put it on a lanyard around my neck to tuck it into my shirt. With all of jumping around I do, having it clipped to my shirt collar just hasn't worked out well. But I'm sold on the product! Good luck with your classes during this odd time!

If you're doing more high impact classes, i see where that could be a challenge. I'm over here just doing slower moving yoga so clipping it on my shirt works. I like the bill of the visor idea for jumping around. That's great. You could try a lavalier mic attachment, too?

  • @AshleyHagen

Through Zoom, I heard you can "share screen" with spotify for the music. I don't use music, though, and don't recommend it without the proper licensing. It's actually illegal as it's considered a public performance unless you have the rights to the song or you pay expensive licensing fees. Your spotify subscription fee doesn't pay for that. One of the best things you can do, to be safe, is to just send the students a link to the spotify playlist, or tell them to put on a specific style of music to their liking.

If it isn’t working with your computer, it’s because you don’t have the right cords. You’ll need a TRS to TRRS patch cable and possible a AUX to USB. I talk about this in several of my microphone videos.

Ah, brilliant Ashley! Like many others I see, I've searching around for solutions and it seems to get complicated with body packs, channels etc. The two rode pieces look so simple. I just wondered if you ever got noise from being attached to clothing particularly in movement? I've had disasters with lavalier mics before.

  • @AshleyHagen

Once when I was wearing a halter top shirt. Because the rode mic is on one side and not a mic all around like a lav mic, it doesn't pick up as much clothes rustling. BUT, wearing tighter fitting clothing is going to be best anyway. For any attached mic.

I have been filming straight from my Mac book Air with Rode Wireless but finding with the laptop being my camera I'm limited to where I can film from (angles etc.) I want to try filming from iPhone 11 but not sure what the adaptor cable is called that you showed - the white adaptor for you phone. And what tripod do you use? Thank you xx

Also check in sound preferences, you must tell the computer what mic use for your audio should work with the original cords for Rode Wireless Go. May help use fewer cords.

I was on youtube for hours looking at what cords i needed or didn't need with my 2015 macbook pro. Oftentimes, external microphones do not show up on mac computers through the microphone input. That was the case with both of my Mac computers. It wasn't showing up at all in my preferences. I found very little online that didn't involve multiple cords. It just needs to be plugged in through USB. Whether it's one or two small cords, it's not too terribly complicated.

Wow this was awesome!! I'm eagerly trying to get into teaching virtual classes. In your opinion, would the Rode work on a Dell laptop in a Facebook room? Problem I'm having is Zoom keeps freezing and cutting out. I even got a wifi extender and it's still giving me issues. But I REALLY want to get back to teaching fitness. I'm in NJ and gyms are at 25% capacity with masks required. I'm not teaching with a mask lol

Yeah, it works with where ever you are filming from. When I do a Facebook live, I just have to make sure that the audio setting it set to "USB Device" because it defaults to the internal microphone. You will likely need to connect the receiver through a USB cable. You can try it first with attaching it straight to the microphone input, but I'm not 100% sure it will work. If not, I have the additional cables listed in the description.

Yes it does. I use it for facebook live all the time. When on a computer/laptop, you will have to change the setting at the bottom of the screen before you go live. It does not automatically default to an external microphone.

It probably isn't the best microphone at picking up both voice and background music. It often will try to erase my deep breath sounds and also doesn't play the tibetan singing bowl when I ring it at the end of class. Your best bet is sharing your music over Zoom using the share computer audio option under "advanced" or just sharing the playlist with your students. I do not play music while I teach on zoom, and when i teach hybrid classes with in-studio participants, I make sure the background music is on pretty low.

Thanks so much. This video was the final deciding factor to get me to purchase a set. Testing is going well so far this week! I found that I do not need the USB cord for either my specific Dell laptop and mac Mini desktop (they both have an input/output jack). I also bought the cheapest earbuds ($30 JLab GO Air True Wireless Earbuds) I could find so I could hear any music or students during class (setting up different devices on zoom on the laptop for input & output). Hope that helps others. Thanks again!

Hi! My wife is a yoga instructor and I'm trying to help her find a wireless microphone solution. I was sold on the Go until I found this video I realized it cuts audio. My wife will definitely need to hear her students throughout the class when it's 1 on 1. My question is if she uses the Go with her iPhone, is she able to connect Wireless earbuds to hear her students at the same time? I noticed you mentioned you picked up a pair. Are you able to use that pair of wireless earbuds to hear students while also speaking to them with the Go on your iPhone? I'm starting to wonder if I should just get her Airpods. I wonder if there are any downsides with those..anyway. Thank you so much!

@@PhantasmaPhonic If you want to be able to hear students, you won't be able to use a mobile device, because you can't select separate mic & speaker inputs. But you CAN do this on a laptop for Zoom. support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/201362283-Testing-computer-or-device-audio This is definitely one of the cons of this set-up but the pros outweigh it for me. I'm finalizing a blog post now about this exact decision that I'll post here later.

@@PhantasmaPhonic That, I don't know for certain. I've been mostly filming on my computer rather than phone. My computer picks up way better video quality and has the option for HD. The sound is not cut off from my computer. I can hear everything. I know that using a splitter cable could work for separate audio input and output on a phone. I tried just now with some wireless earbuds (that i'm still getting used to) and the rode wireless go connected to my phone and filmed a simple video and could not hear anything through them on the playback until i unplugged the rode wireless go. Airpod quality is not as good at this, but it does work okay. I was supposed to get a pair for mother's day and it looks like that fell through and was forgotten about. I will have to buy them myself.

@@PhantasmaPhonic Another thought - with her teaching one-on-one, if she is okay with an earbud in her ears, the airpods or another wireless bluetooth options is probably better. I like the Rode Wireless Go for classes that I am also recording to put on youtube, so the audio is great for the re-play. One on one is not as important for super awesome audio. The one student won't notice much difference, and if they do, it's not a bit deal.

Hi Ashley! I hope this wasn’t already answered, and I apologize if it has. Have you on a zoom call, shared computer sound AND the audio from USB? I think the current set up will work amazingly well when I’m teaching 2nd graders once the school year starts, BUT I also teach a workout class. I’d like to know if I could play music from my Mac and still use the set up you shared for the mic.
