Wireless Electronic Speed Controller (ESC) Installed in Trolling Motor Head

Спорт

In this video, I illustrate the methods I used to build and install a Wireless Electronic Speed Controller in the head unit of a 12V transom mount trolling motor. I used Channel 2 of the wireless receiver for this build. This method may be used on several different makes and models of trolling motors.

Total game-changer! I discovered that if you activate the cruise control button on the remote, you can "bump" the throttle just a bit and the speed will increase/decrease in small increments. When using “cruise control”, you can push the stick backwards and it just reduces the speed by a little bit. Same with pushing it forward, it speeds up in increments. Pretty handy to stay in cruise control mode but still have throttle control.

Do you think there would be a way to add the steering functionality to this remote, to use the left/right buttons of the joystick? The actuator arm moves out with positive current, and when you reverse the polarity, it goes back in. There must be a way to do this...

I'm currently looking into this myself. I have a 12v linear actuator arm that is attached to my motor tiller and mounted on the side of my kayak. The arm moves in and out when supplied with either 12v + or 12v - (reverse polarity makes the arm go back in). It's flawless but I have it wired up to a momentary switch that I hold in my hand next to me kayak seat. Having something wireless would be fun. Also, my setup doesn't actually allow me to control the speed of the motor, just the steering. So integrating mty steering setup into this ESC/RC remote idea would be so wicked! I basically need to find some way to trigger 12v + and 12v - wirelessly...

Using a PWM, you can keep the stock switch intact and use quick connects if it fails. An ESC is more complicated. You would need a separate control box for each using quick connects for the power and speed controller. You can disconnect the pos/neg of the trolling motor and plug directly to the battery for emergency use. The motor would immediately jump to WOT but would get you home.

Nice work, a good video would be also, how much top speed you loose by using this ESC vs hooking direct to battery on max speed (comparing speed and amps for the different configurations) if the diference is substancial u could also add a "nitro button" to your setup with a relay bypassing the ESC for those long distances that you dont need variable speed :)

Seems like all these trolling motor videos skip so many steps and make it impossible for someone with no knowledge of these products to complete the build. They show a part list. Crazy how many people have done this and there's not one complete step by step how to video.

Everybody starts as a beginner at one point. You should start at the basics and get an understanding of how the parts work. As you learn more, you can move up to more advanced projects. This is an advanced project. You should start with a beginning ESC build and do your own research how they work. Once you do that, you can move up to more involved projects. Tutorials can not keep repeating the basics in every video. It is the responsibility of each person to do the research until they feel comfortable to build a project. If you had searched my earlier videos, you would see that the remote and receiver I used already came paired. It is important to understand the concepts because how will you troubleshoot them if they don't work?
