Wired a Traffic Signal Light For Use Indoors (Work Project)

Ойын-сауық

I recorded this video to show a good friend of mine what I did on a Friday night, and figured a few other people may like to see it, or get ideas from it. This is not a how to video. I'm simply showing what I did for a work project. (It is not mine, I just cleaned it up and modified it to be used as a display item for work)
I wired up a traffic light to plug into a wall, and also installed switches so all three lights can be toggled on an off in any desired configuration.

That was interesting. A couple of those would be great atmospheric lighting for a patio or porch!

If you want one, you can find some on eBay for pretty good prices usually. I have an 30” one that I got from eBay 2 months ago and all LED’s with controller, pretty fun project to work on and a controller off of amazon is cheap like $27. It’s pretty cool to have at least one in a house, btw I like your Cinnabon vids btw, cats are my favorite animals

Thanks! I work at a civil engineering firm, so our field staff gathered some items that were to be discarded (after replacement, upgrade, etc.) from job sites. It may be incorporated into our building remodel, as was done with road signs and the like.

Traffic lights are a lot bigger than I thought.

They look small outside. Inside is when you can really get a good idea of how big they actually are. Which makes sense when you start thinking about the fact that most stoplights now are standard sized 12" diameter lenses and they have to be visible from far distances. So when you have 3 12" lenses combined with the extra length the housing adds, every light you see is easily probably about 3½-4ft tall. Many places in the US, particularly urban areas, still have 8" lenses or combo 12" & 8" lenses where either the Red or Green lenses are 12" and the others are 8". However these days those are all slowly being phased out throughout the US in favor of full 12" Lenses.

I just picked up this exact one! Is it possible you could email me the steps and supplies in wiring it up like you show in the video? I want to do the on/off switches too. It would really be helpful. I have to somehow find replacement light hoods, two of them are cracked in half. I guess I could also make my own out of other material and paint them. Thanks so much!!!

It's all pretty simple electronics. I just wired all of them (jumped them to one another) using the terminals so initially they all light up, then I simply introduced switches to each color.

I saw behind the yellow light you have but mine, has a lot more wires running through this thing.im sure i could probably eliminate alot of them just unsure where to start. do you facebook messneger? I can show you pictures.

@@Silverado21 each light has two wires, a neutral and hot, all go to a middle board with terminals on mine. some may be different, definitely would want to talk to an electrician or someone experienced with that as I'm not qualified to give advice of such things.
