Wire Rope Sling Explained with SWL Loading capacity formula

Wire rope sling construction and working load calculation, this video explains all about wire rope slings which are using in construction line for lifting of material or equipment, in this video formula with example has been explained for calculation of safe working load, there are so many type of using slings like vertical, choker hitch and basket hitch, the wire rope is made with fibre core or wire rope core the centre core may be made of wire rope of Improved plow (IP), EIP (Extra improved plow or EEIP.

Hi Mr, nice presentation. In a basket hitch, u didnt mention the reduction in capacity due to D+d ratio. Would u like to explain?

Basket configuration does not always double the capacity. It is dependent on the shape of the Load. If the load is curved or circular at the bottom i.e no sharp bends at the edges then the capacity of the basket hitch can be double. For loads that have the rope over a sharp corner or a 90 degree bend the capacity does not double. Using the formula D xDx8 does not reflect the actual capacity of a Wire rope. Wire ropes come in different configuration and construction and different breaking strengths. Wire ropes strength should be obtained from the manufacturers test certificate. Fiber core ropes have a much lower breaking strength and should be avoided for use as lifting sling. Fiber core ropes can be used to tie down loads, used a guy ropes to support poles typically. IWRC ropes are ideal for use as lifting slings as they have a higher breaking strength as compared to Fiber core ropes When any modification is done to the rope e.g addition of eye to make a sling from a wire rope the capacity is reduced by approximately 20% if the termination is done correctly. In the absence of any document for the particular wire rope sling then one can consider using the formula DxDX8 in an emergency. Current industry practice is to reject any rope without valid test certificate and identification markings. EIPS or XIPS is Extra improved plough steel EEIPS or XXIPS id extra extra improved plough steel. Otherwise a good presentation. .

We are calculating wire rope capacity (SWL)= d^2x8mt, where d is the diameter of wire rope in inches. Thus, for 1" sling capacity will be 1x1x8=8mt.
