Lisa, I'm only twenty minutes into this tutorial and I had to pause long enough to say I could watch you all day. For the past couple years I've been teaching myself thanks to How-To books and videos like yours...but finally, at age fifty-seven, I'm soon taking my first week-long silversmith class at William Holland in GA. Now that I've discovered your tutorials I'm eager to view them all-in one sitting-but keep reminding myself I'm past the age of pulling all-nighters cramming for exams. So maybe I'll spread out your sessions a bit. . . Regardless, the point of this post is to say: You have excellent online presence. I was hooked from the very beginning when you jokingly commented "...I'm just going to babble and babble but I'm going to give you a lot of useful information." And that you have! I'm not even halfway through and already I've stopped several times to go back and review. I can't wait to run downstairs and compare my tools to yours. Have I been using crap. . .or did I choose wisely? Okay. I've lollygagged long enough. Back to class I go.

Although this is over 50 minutes long it is packed with information, tips and insights that in truth would take many hours to gather from across a myriad of sources. So it is a great investment in time, and that together with the pace and style of the presenter make this truly the best video out there on wire jewellery-making. Thank you so much for putting together such a comprehensive and really enjoyable tutorial!

I was curious if I wanted to learn jewelry making. This was a great video because it showed a lot of the basic skills, tools, and materials. It let me evaluate the time, money and effort, now I will go out and price things, and think about if I will get enough enjoyment and pleasure out of it for the cost and time. I have so far just strung a few beads on wire, enjoyed the process of design, but realized I expect a much finer finish and variety of size than slipping over the head. Thanks for taking the time to go further in explaining what is necessary.

This class was EXCELLENT! I am new to beading and have been having trouble making loops for earrings, etc. I had watched your loop making tutorial (also EXCELLENT) and subscribed to your channel & found this vid. The info. on tools was priceless! I will be upgrading my tools immediately! I can't wait to make this project; but first I am going to get some "cheap" wire to practice the loops & spirals. Then I will purchase the silver (I LUV silver and I'm allergic to other metals) to complete.

+Araceli Villalobos Hi there, sorry for the late reply! I would not use any of the cutters that we sell on stainless headpins. They are likely very hard. For those, I would just use a pair of cutters from the hardware store that are stronger and won't give you a heart attack if you ding them :)

Dead soft is great to wire wrap with because its easier to wrap. No need to hammer the loops. You are work hardening the metal as you are wrapping.

Hi Lisa, Thank you for this video. I have a question, hopefully you understand what I'm trying to ask. I make rosaries, have been for about five years, on and off. I still like to watch you tubers, especially when it comes to wire wrapping. So, I used to string my rosaries in the past, I watched a lot of videos before attempting. lol. Also, through trial and error, found out about using less expensive tools. Sorry about my jibber jabber. When I make wire wrapped rosaries or bracelets, do I need to face my loops in the same direction? I've watched and listened to some experts! they give mixed information. Please help me understand this mind boggler.? I wish I could send you a picture? Oh I can upload a thirty second video to show you? Thank you for your time.

I am VERY NEW to the Hand Made Jewellery Business, so this may sound like a stupid question, but as the old saying goes "How can you find the answer if you don't ask the Question ?. So, I'm asking. You say you use a "Chasing Hammer" to harden the wire. If you're "Financially Challenged" as in Flat Busted Broke can you get away with using an "Ordinary hammer" eg. a "Claw Hammer" instead, just hitting VERY gently, so as to lessen the chance of badly marking the wire ?.

Love your videos. I would like some advice please. I’m debating on whether to buy some sterling silver or fine silver wire. I’ve been advised against getting fine silver, that it’s too soft and not strong enough for jewelry links and findings. I like that fine silver doesn’t tarnish and can be fused to itself. Rio Grande’s prices for fine silver and sterling silver are pretty good right now so I’d like to get some of either or both and set it aside till my wire working skills are more perfected. So my question is sterling silver, fine silver or some of both? Sorry for the long story. It was longer. I actually shortened it.

It's really personal preference and what your project is. Generally for wire wrapping we use sterling. But fine silver is great for fusing and also wire weaving projects. It has a higher content of silver and doesn't get fire scale when fusing, but it does tarnish. They both do when exposed to the elements...depends on environment.

When you showed the difference in cuts that the flush cutters make, you didn't use the flush side of the Pakistani flush cutter but you used the flush side of the second cutter. Why is that? If you use the wrong side of a flush cutter you won't get a flat cut.

ShegoBernstein the flat side of the Pakistani cutter won't give a good cut, it isn't the best quality tool. Even on a high quality flush cutter only one side cuts flush. You need to cut with the flat side against your wire to get a flush cut.

+Beaducation I loved the video! And tough I agree with you in the quality of tools, +ShegoBernstein has a point. If you wanted to compare quality to show the difference in quality cuts you should have done the same side cut on both and then probably the oposite ("wrong side") on both to do a fair comparison. Most people who watch this video, unlike some of us, are just starting and they would benefit for fair comparison of products, especially since most beginners usually start with lower quality products and tools to get the feel of the craft in case they don't really like it and if they go by this video they would avoid the said pliers (although it would be the better choice to make since they are not best) even if they can't afford (or want to invest) in better/more expensive pliers.

Please tell me what is Tibetan silver?

  • @beaducation

Tibetan silver is used primarily in jewelry components, and is similar to pewter - an alloy of copper, and sometimes tin or nickel, with a small percentage of pure silver. Its overall appearance is of aged silver, but it can be polished to provide highlights on complex castings

Beaducation Thank you. I use Tibetan silver components sometimes. They're fairly inexpensive and really pretty. I try to make sure I buy ones that say nickel free as many people have nickel allergies.
